I think he is Joe Whitney small in stature, he faces an uphill climb to the NHL, would be a great story if he one day makes it.

I think he's being listed at 6'0 tall, not sure how he is small in stature. Probably does need to get add some muscle to his frame.

SBNation has him at 5'10" and 153 pounds, though I found an article saying 5'10" 175. So Boucher type height, needs to bulk up like Reid has.

Gotta be off. Just by watching both play, there's no way Whitney is as tall as Boucher. I would say Boucher is 5'10" and Whitney is about 5'6".

Yeah I've also been intrigued by him so I've been following his stats very closely, but I haven't gotten a chance to watch him. He seems to be a little bit streaky but that's not a non issue this early on.

And FWIW Hockeydb has him listed at 5ft 9 inches and 155 lbs, the Coquitlam express website (his former junior team) had him at 5 ft 10 inches 165 lbs and the Harvard site has him at 5-10 175 lbs. So it's safe to say hes around 5'10''. That kind of size is nothing to worry about. I certainly wouldn't compare him to Joe Whitney though.

Anyhow, his size aside, I know nothing about his style, if he's a good skater, strong on his feet etc.

Certainly an intriguing project pick though.

Talking Kerfoot, not Whitney. Whitney is a lollipop kid.

I hope Lou sticks around long enough to seem what comes of this group of kids. Obviously a lot can change when you're talking about prospects, but overall it seems he and Conte have done an alright job at the draft since that unspeakably bad period between Parise and Josefson. A lot of depth picks look to be progressing in a good way.

I still think it's a long shot but if just one of the group of guys like Black, the Bens, the Blakes, Gavrus, Kerfoot, Kujawinski, etc. can hit like Henrique did, it would be a huge boost to a prospect pool that's absolutely loaded at D.

However, there's also lots of question marks about the the true ceiling of most of our young forwards. It's very hard to tell if someone like Pietila will be a useful, valuable bottom 6 guy or the next Tim Sestito. But Lou's done the right thing and not wasted too many low picks on goons and guys who were already depth forwards before being drafted. Shooting for skill in the bottom rounds with Bell, Wood, Kerfoot, Gavrus, that's how you can achieve a respectable farm system when you're drafting consistently low. Now we just get to wait and see.

Except he hasn't really shot for enough skill with his high picks which is what is hurting our prospect pool at forward. All of the safer picks haven't developed much in the way of scoring leaving us with essentially no top end forward prospects.

Does anyone think Lou could make a little splash into NCAA free agency this year? I think it would be wise without picks, not just the 1st but a couple we traded last season. We should only be going for forwards, of course.

Has anyone heard anything else on that Euro prospect we apparently had our eyes on? Can not remember his name or nationality, but he wasn't from a typical hockey nation.

If I were Lou, I'd try to snag a couple younger forward free agents out of Europe and/or college to make up for picks we don't have.

I'm a fan of Ryan Haggerty at R.P.I as a possible pickup.

I don't think it's had as much to do with valuing traits over skill as it does just making bad picks. And realistically, the only truly bad picks have been Bergfors (who got us Kovalchuk and a trip to the SCF), Tedenby (who is a case of valuing skill over any other traits), and Corrente, whose bust has more to do with injuries and poor development than bad valuation. And even then, Corrente was a 30th overall pick in a bad draft.

All I'm saying is, considering few years of striking out in the first round, we could be WAY worse off if not for some of the depth guys coming through. I don't think Lou and his staff get enough credit for that. Imagine where we'd be without Fayne, Gelinas, Merrill, Henrique, Urbom, Severson, Boucher and Santini in the organization, let alone lesser talented guys like Helgeson and Scarlett and Black, etc?

Considering how difficult it really is to land great picks out of the draft, Lou and his staff deserve credit for keeping the kid ship afloat. We've come a long way since Eckford and Frazee were our top prospects.

NJ strength is also a knack for finding good free agents.
After Madden and Rafalski, they found Greene and Clarkson.
Several other guys became depth players (ie Pelley, Sislo...) but still managed to play a few NHL games, that's better than most of our draftees.

Pietila also seems to be pretty good at faceoffs too. I'd like to see overall faceoff numbers from these guys.
