Now more than just one pundit fantasizing:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/n...hockey-league/

Quote:
Sportsnet's John Shannon floated out the name of Wayne Gretzky, who is believed to be interested in getting back involved with an NHL team now that commissioner Gary Bettman has settled his debt from the Phoenix Coyotes debacle.
Gretzky, who is on friendly terms with Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, attended a Caps game in the owner's box this season. There is "mutual interest" in Gretzky joining the organization, according to Shannon's sources.
Not sure how reliable this guy is.

Alan May was on 980 talking with Cooley and Czabe. He wouldn't mention who he has in mind with being the team's GM but he did say that he was thinking of someone with a winning pedigree that had been affiliated with the King's organization. Not sure its where he is going but my mind immediately shot to Gretzky,

I would guess he's referring to someone current like Mike Futa.

Reading over Gretzky's time in Phoenix isn't pretty, even setting aside his coaching tenure. He hired people he knew and eventually new ownership had to fire them all because it wasn't working. Maybe he has a wider network to draw upon now but that period wouldn't sell me on picking him for any management capacity.

Yeah, Gretzky in PHX wasn't pretty. I don't know how much of it was Gretzky's responsibility. Maybe most. Or maybe the PHX organization was screwy before he got there. I don't know the facts.

I don't know the assistant managers around the league well enough to favor any one. But I would definitely bring in a high up guy from an organization that has a winning tradition—not just a flash in the pan.

If Ted brings Gretzky in and leaves him alone I'd be ok with it. It might not work but #99 won't stay 17 years with no Cup.

If Ted brings in Wayne or a Murray, he's a bigger idiot than I thought.

Which of these teams does not belong?

Caps, Leafs, Kings & Rangers

And that's why I won't get to worked up about this rumor.

Having said that, how does he rate in his post playing days career in the NHL? More than just the name?

I'm not following. Why don't the Caps belong in that group?

seriously, bobby mac thinks it makes sense. if there is a reliable and level headed pundit in the nhl world, its that guy. his first comment on the subject is Washington is a city he would be willing to relocate his family to. step one. he has an apparent on going relationship with leonsis. this is foundation.

I don't think this is going to happen, but lets say that leonsis wants a hockey guy at dp's level. let dp stay on for the real estate and taxes and part owner and bring in gretzky to help set the tone and hire a gm.

doesn't sound odd to me at all.

If this comes to pass, it's basically reinforcing my fear and reservations about GMGM leaving. He needed to go, but what was coming in?

key part of may's quote, unless you wrote yours out of context.

if correct, a person that had been part of the org ( thus ruling out futa ), only logical name is hextall.

I was joking. I thought using that particular Melrose picture in association with "winning pedigree" was good for a laugh.

lets be honest. the Canadian media loves to rip Ovechkin. They love to laud Gretzky. It wouldn't hurt to have the powers that be liking the idea of the Capitals winning.
Spot on Tex. I am with you on this one. Time to all band together as fans at The start of this new era. Would be an interesting choice and he's a sure fire power broker. He's Jordan...hopefully without the ego/need to run it all.

Meanwhile you totally missed the sarcasm of the Barry Melrose picture.

You don't promote someone who failed on the level he did when he was with Phoenix.

Let's get a professional in the job... someone who knows the players. The Howe braintrust.

Meh. Not a great reference. Gretz had a terrible ownership situation. Not exactly a fair gauge.

Howe? Why exactly?

Hate the idea of Gretzky in Washington though.
