Los angeles sharks

Not sure if this has ever been posted... but i came across this very interesting wiki article about the WHA, Los Angeles Sharks while perusing hockeyDB. Who knew? lol

The Sharks could not capitalize on their successful first season and sunk to last place in their second year. They had the league's worst record, scored the fewest goals, and allowed the second most amount of goals. This drop off coincided with a resurgence across town by the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, who qualified for the playoffs in the 1973-74 season for the first time in 5 years.

Don't know much about the team, but I do know I love those sweaters. Christmas is coming up here...

Ah, the LA Sharks. I remember going to a handful of games as a kid. Saw Derek Sanderson play against them. Really liked some of the WHA rules - especially icing during PK. Nice jerseys, entertaining team.

Considering that we keep hearing that the NHL wants to create more offense, I'm surprised the WHA rule for icing (you had to get beyond your own blue line before you could ice the puck) during a PK has never been brought up.

I saw Gary Veneruzzo play for the Seattle Totems in the WHL against the Phoenix Roadrunners. He played for the Roadrunners in the WHA as well. Also a few ex-Roadrunners on that team in Ted McCaskill who was a big bruising center, and defensemen Jim Niekamp and Gerry O'drowski. A lot of the vets from the old Western Hockey League found their way into the WHA and picked up a little bit more money than they were used to the last couple of years of their career.

McCaskill's son is Kirk McCasskill who pitched for the Angels for a number of seasons. I played American Legion baseball against him and his Dad was often in attendance. Real nice guy. I recognized him right away and would talk a little hockey with him. I think he was surprised to be recognized as an ex-Roadrunner at the ballpark.

I used to have a Sharks puck, and wish I still had it.

Always liked their logo.

My favorite player on the Sharks was Bart Crashley and Tom Gilmore was a tough Sum*****.

I think we should pool all our money, buy the Ducks and change their name to the Los Angeles Mighty Ducks of Anaheim!

I still have an L.A. Sharks lapel pin. It is a Sharks face coming at you with its mouth open. It is Black on a white background. The WHA had some good teams and allot of great players made the jump.

It was huge at the time when Marc Tardif left the Montreal Canadiens to sign (450 000 a lot of dough in 73' for a hockey player)with the LA Sharks.
