LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have exercised the team contract option for the 2005-06 NHL season on defenseman Mike Weaver and have agreed to terms on a three-year entry level contract with goaltender Ryan Munce, Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreements were not announced.

What about Steckel? Did they have to sign him or lose him?

Who knows i dont think he is that important i'm glad he greatly improved but i dont think he'll ever have an impact and we should get a 2nd or 3rd round compensation pick for him which i'd rather have

DO we know whether or not that is still plausible in the new cba?

If there is still compensation, and the pick is tacked on to the end of the second round and not the first, I'd much rather keep Steckel at a modest entry-level deal. This is a mediocre draft at best, and I'm pleased with the guy's development over the last year and a half.

Yes. Clubs that lost a Group 3 free agent to another club between July 1 and September 15, 2004 will be eligible to receive a compensatory draft choice in the 2005 Entry Draft slotted on the same basis as under the expired CBA. Going forward, clubs will no longer receive compensatory draft choices for the loss of unrestricted free agents but will receive such choices for the loss of unsigned first-round draft picks.

If the compensatory picks are the same as the old CBA, we would get pick number 60 overall. Steckel sounded like the Kings might not offer him a contract if they could get a compensatory pick in his interview.

Steckel signed directly with the Manchester Monarchs and not the standard two-way entry contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

Well since he was drafted in 2001 would the team even get compensation? I know that if the 2003 draft class reenters the teams do. I am not too sure about Steckel though.

In order for the Kings to get a compensation pick they would have needed to make Steckel a "bona fide" offer AND Steckel would have had to reject their offer. My guess is that on August 1st, Steckel becomes a UFA if the Kings don't sign him....
