Ah, that'll get eaten up pretty fast though if Coyle and Brodin continue to develop.

They aren't due for new contracts until the summer of 2015 (same as Granlund), when we'll have ~$39m in space (not including that years' cap increase).

There's actually plenty of room to add a couple of $4m-$5m players... or one high level contract.

Depends. I'm curious to know the transition. With the higher cap increase, I wouldn't be surprised if Brodin got a bridge contract of 5 years 30 million to be honest. (If he continues to progress). I look at OEL's contract, when it was signed, and the inflation.

That's why I'm thinking it might be a better idea to work out his extension this summer, try and keep it closer to $5m. I've always looked at McDonagh's contract as a comparable for Brodin; I think OEL would just be his absolute ceiling.

UFAs
Heatley
Rupp
Konopka
Stoner
Prosser

Key RFAs
Nino
Zucker
Fontaine

Figure $3m or $3.5m for Nino, depending on how the remainder of his year goes.
Fontaine can come back for $900k
Stoner can come back for the same as last year, or a minimal raise.
Don't want to see Rupp or Heatley back.
Konopka could probably go either way.

Capgeek has Fontaine as a RFA.

Also of the UFA we should re-sign Stoner.

Downie is a FA, maybe we should put him on the opposite wing of Cooke. That could be fun.

Cooke - Free Agent/Haula - Downie
Fontaine - Brodziak - Mitchell

We could legitimately put together a line of Cooke - Ott - Downie. Good times.

Even ignoring the top-end guys like Vanek/Phaneuf/Girardi, even guys like Steen/Roy, we could definitely make some smaller signings and improve. Might be able to get guys like Downie/Niskanen for less than $8m combined.

Parise - Koivu - Coyle
Nino - Granlund - Pominville
Cooke - Haula - Downie
Fontaine - Brodziak - Mitchell

Suter - Brodin
Scandella - Spurgeon
Ballard - Niskanen
Stoner

Harding
Backstrom

And we'd still be $10m under the cap, so if we wanted to hold of on Haula in the NHL and grab a veteran to complete that 3rd line, we could.

My concern is if someone signed Brodin to an offersheet. I don't think he'd take it but ouch.

Extend him before he reaches RFA.

You make an excellent point. We ought to take that into consideration. Don't want to have to pay him Suter/Weber salary for a few years yet.

A lot of better defensemen than him weren't or haven't been offer sheeted. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

That's true, Doughty didn't get Offer-sheeted.

Karlsson, OEL, Pietrangelo, McDonagh, etc...

Unless we completely screw ourselves capwise, it's a non-issue.

+ hearing the cap is estimated to be around $71M next season compared to the $64M now. That can help us a lot.

Wonder what kind of deal Steen will sign with this breakout year? Would honestly rather have Steen than Vanek if costs were the same, but I don't believe Steen is an option (he'll resign). Realistically though I could see us going after Orpik if this whole Thornton debacle doesn't blast him into concussion land.

Just depends. A lot of these defensemen are a bit older than Brodin. So the years are curious. Furthermore cap space plays a role. With the cap space being opened up...well there is room. You never know with teams like the Islanders.

We're pretty well locked in on at the LD position with Scandella playing as well as he is. Suter, Scandella and Ballard are all under contract for next year. I don't know how an Orpik/Ballard pairing, with Ballard on the right side, would work out. Also, Orpik likely won't be too eager to take a sizeable paycut, so do we want to pay him $4+ million to play on the 3rd pair? Not sure about that.

Add that Dreger is claiming that with that huge new Canadian TV deal + other things, that for the next few years the cap will go up 8-12 million a year every year.

That is insane. And horrible for the smaller market teams. And I can't see the Wild being able to afford much higher than 80 million, to be honest.

Hopefully this doesn't just become the New York/Montreal/Toronto show. But who am I kidding. It probably will.
