If you were Nonis...

What would you do if you were Dave Nonis on the upcoming draft. Here's what I'd do:

Pre-draft:

To Van: #2 overall selection

To Anaheim: Jovanovski

Draft Day:

Draft Brule with the #2 overall selection. Draft Skille with the #10 selection.

Youd draft Brule with #2 overall? and trade Jovo for him?

I cant believe how highly rated so many canuck fans have him. Id take him 4th at the earliest.

Brule, Skille and Neidermayer for Jovanovski (since they'd basically make that deal if they were going to make a big push for Niedermayer).

With the cap now here, youth will be even more important. Stockpiling your prospect pool is what the Canucks need to do, and when there's so many good players out there via free agency, this is the year to do it.

Having 2 players such as Skille and Brule in your system is worth Ed Jovanovski if you can sign a dman to adequately replace him.

If we're guaranteed Niedermayer then hell yes. If we're not then hell no.

If I was reasonably confident that I could fill the hole on D, I'd definetly trade jovo to Anaheim for the 2nd overall and anything else i could grab (TBays 2nd rounder ), and I'd use the 2nd and 10th overall picks to take Jack Johnson and Skille or O'Marra (depending on who is left).

If I were Nonis....

Trade Jovo to Anaheim for #2 pick oveall.
Draft Johnson at #2 and draft the best player still left at #10.
Sign Niedermayer if he is really willing to sign for a reduced price with us like he has been telling the media.
Sign Forsberg and Naslund.

Yeah, if we could get Naslund, Forsberg, and Niedermayer to sign, my team would look something like...

Naslund Morrison Forsberg
Sedin Sedin Bertuzzi
Cooke Chubarov Linden
Bouck Kesler May

Niedermayer - Salo
Ohlund - Sopel
Allen - cheap ass UFA

Cloutier
Auld

Well for one i doubt Skille will be avail at 10, i would think the Sens would be smart to pick him up at 9.

I would also pick Johnson at #2 no matter what.

Having Johnson and Neidermayer as well as maybe skille or even someone like Bourret would be > Jovo IMO.

But of course this is all provided we can land Neidermayer... If we dont, then getting those two draft picks doesnt really fill any holes.

Screw forsberg.. we need a goaltender.

If Naslund doesn't return.

Canucks trade jovo to anaheim for 2nd overall. Draft Brule or pouliott, sign neidermayer Trade cloutier for a bag of pucks and sign paul kariya.

I doubt we'll see Jovo traded prior to any possibly Niedermayer signing, way too much risk involved.

Agreed. Trading your top 1-2 defenceman because you hope to get a player in 2 days when UFA season begins is pretty stupid.

Right...and that solves our goaltending problem...how?? Are you hoping the bag of pucks will do the job or are you suggest Paul Kariya strap on the pads??

Brad May should not be coming back. With Goren now signed and King still having a cheaper contract both of the players should come before resigning May. Plus you don't have Ruttuu anywhere on your list. Brookbank can be your "cheap ass" d-man.

The way Nieds has been talking up Vancouver in the media I'm starting to believe it might be such a big risk at all.

All we need to do is tape the pads in front of the net.... Good enough.

I think it's just as likely he winds up in Calgary. Until Niedermayer is in a Canucks' jersey, Nonis can't trade away Jovo, it's just not plausible to trade one of your top two defensemen in hopes of signing perhaps the biggest UFA available. If Jovo's gone, that gives Niedermayer a TONNE of leverage to milk Nonis and the Canucks even more, not a good situation at all.

Hello training camp

I like this idea. However, one wonders if Columbus would. I'm sure the Canucks could trade Sopel somewhere and get us a decent second round pick... so we'd get the #10, a mid 2nd rounder and room to do what you suggested.

Perhaps Sopel for Rob Niedermayer and a pick? Do the Ducks need someone like Sopel on defence?

With Cloutier in net, I'd much rather keep as much depth on the blue line as possible. Having the above would be pretty awsome.

Oops.. sorry I accidentally delted "sign kahbibulen" on that.

Cloutier gone -3 million extra
Naslund gone - 6 million extra
Jovo gone- 4 million extra

13 million dollars to spend.

Neidermayer 6 mill
Khabibulen- 4.5 mill
Kariya 2.5 million.

It works.

If I were Nonis... you'd call me CRAZY... I call this "Project Semenko".

Line 1: Naslund (4.5) - Forsberg (4.5) - Brookbank (.450)
Line 2: Langdon (.450) - Morrison (2.8) - Bertuzzi (5.0)
Line 3: Cooke (.750) - Linden (1.52) - R.Niedermayer (1.25)
Spare: Bouck (.450)

Def 1: S.Niedermayer (4.5) - Witt (1.75)
Def 2: Ohlund (2.75) - Salo (1.2)
Def 3: Bieksa (.450) - S.Morrisonn (.750)
Spare: Pending (.450)

Goal: Kolzig (4.75) - Auld (.513)

Total Payroll: $38,783,000
Roster: 16 Skaters + 2 Goalies

That's right... no 4th line!!! Tell me one player who wouldn't want the extra icetime that would create!
I'd then double shift Bertuzzi once in a while onto the first line (for Brookbank) and Naslund once in a while onto the second line (for Langdon)

For this to happen:
1. Bertuzzi renegotiates to 5.0 million
2. Naslund and Forsberg accept 4.5 million to play together
3. S.Niedermayer accepts 4.5 million to play in Vancouver with his brother
4. R.Niedermayer renegotiates to 1.25 million to play in Van with his bro

TRANSACTIONS
UFA Signings: Naslund, Forsberg, S.Niedermayer

To Anaheim: D.Sedin, H.Sedin, Chubarov, Malik (or Sopel)
To Vancouver: #2 Pick, R.Niedermayer, G.Burnett (Manitoba)
(Sorry twins! Don't want to see you go, but there's no room on Project Semenko)

To Washington: Jovanovski, Cloutier, Sopel (or Malik)
To Vancouver: Kolzig, Witt, S.Morrisonn
(This is pretty much a wash in salary. But we might need to sweeten the pot)

To New Jersey: Allen
To Vancouver: Langdon & Draft Pick

To Chicago: Ruutu
To Vancouver: Draft Pick or Minor Leaguer w/ call-up potential

MANITOBA CALL-UPS
Defencemen: Baumgartner, Mojzis
Forwards: Kesler, King, Goren
Enforcer: G.Burnett

I'm not expecting any support on this one... so save your flaming. The title of this post is "If you were Nonis..." So just be thankful that I'm not.

Replace May with McCarty. More vets with cups are needed on this team. May's a good guy and all but McCarty's a better all around player than May.

I just read that someone wanted to trade Allen for Langdon? All I have to say is....wow.

Even if the Canucks were guaranteed to sign Neidermayer, I still wouldn't want them to trade Jovo. Doesn't anybody else think losing Jovo seriously takes away toughness and grit from a team that didn't really have that much to begin with?

Neidermayer is definitely an overall upgrade on Jovo but at the same time losing Jovo really changes the face of not only the Canuck's defense but also the team. If they let May go on top of this, the team would look like a bunch of pansies. Their toughest players would be Bert, Rutuu, and Allen, with a bit of grit thrown in from the Sedins and Cooke.

Sure Jovo can be boneheaded sometimes, but he also brings so much in untangible emotion, engergy, and toughness.

Yeah... Allen for Langdon... straight across... and no other roster moves. Just that ONE trade.
