I feel like you don't know what the standings are...

It's:
Sabres
Panthers
Oilers
Islanders (Sabres pick)
Calgary
Columbus

So if you think Ekblad will fall to fifth, then we have him with your opinion. However, I doubt he will fall to fifth as Reinhart/Ekblad are far ahead of the rest of the top 10.

I wonder if in that case we might trade down, as our primary goal this time around should be defenseman and power forwards. Obviously if we have a top three pick we wait and see for Ekblad.

The only team that I believe can defiantly finish above us in the draft order is Buffalo I don't see the Flames dropping below them in the standings. I would expect Islanders and Edmonton will be able to pick it up soon maybe even Florida if they can get things going.

I think we finish 3rd last. The Oilers, Jackets and Isles should all pick it up. Florida is terrible.

Since the Isles pick belongs to the Sabres that means they have a higher chance to win the draft lottery now if Isles do bad?

Florida is only 3 points under us in the standings I think it could be close. Columbus should defiantly pick it up when Gaborik and Horton are back.

If the pick is in the 1 - 10 range the Islanders can defer the pick to 2015. (I think?)

Given that Ekblad and Reinhart will be gone there, I wonder if we trade down and pick up Virtanen or the like and pass on the smaller Nylander.

I could also see the team using a high pick (if their player is off the board) in a package to bring in a young up-and-coming star like E. Kane. Obviously just my thoughts, but I could see that happening.

I honestly could see it as well. Hopefully not Kane though. Hate that guy.

I could see them trading down as well - maybe grab that big Defenseman from Red Deer.
(too early on a Monday, completely drawing a blank on his name )

EDIT: Hayden Fleury

Forgot about that I think you're right but I'm pretty sure the Isles can give away the pick this year even if it's in the top 10 so they may have a better shot at McDavid next year if they don't look so good.

I'm not so sure Ekblad doesn't fall to us at 3. Jones went 4th this, this draft doesn't have the same kind of high end talent but the season isn't done yet. As of today, I agree Ekblad goes 2, but that could very well change.

TOP 30 RANKING

1. SAM REINHART, C, WHL
2. MICHAEL DAL COLLE, W, OHL
3. LEON DRAISAITL, C, WHL
4. AARON EKBLAD, D, OHL
5. SAM BENNETT, C, OHL
6. JARED MCCANN, C, OHL
7. HAYDN FLEURY, D, WHL
Like others have said, I think we likely end up in the 3-5 spot, and there's a good chance Ekblad is available there.

Ah, I forgot that the Panthers had sunk behind the Oilers.

However, the Islanders pick is for the Islanders because they're allowed to defer it until 2015 since it's top ten.

Wow Fleury is ranked #7 now? Wasn't he ranked in the teens recently?

Erp. Forget about trading down. He might be the choice at #4/5/6.

It also depends on what teams need when picking and since Florida passed up on Jones this year (which now looks like it was a mistake) will they really pass up on Ekblad? Buffalo needs everything but I feel they would take Reinhart.

ISS had him at #9 a few weeks ago. If I remember right the DraftBuzz list doesn't include Euros yet, so Fleury might still be in the range. I think most people have him as a top-10 pick though.

Edit: Yeah, that DraftBuzz list has no Nylander, or Anton Karlsson. Both could be ahead of Fleury

Anyone else realise that if we get Ekblad, he'll be the second defenseman on the team that we've drafted out of the Barrie Colts?

Brodie played for Saginaw when he was drafted.

I would love to see the Flames win the lottery (not last place) and grab Reinhart. I love Ekblad, but having a 1 - 2 punch down the middle of Reinhart - Monahan for the next 10+ years would be fantastic! Reinhart plays a similar game to Monahan but does pretty much everything a little better. Both are great two way forwards with solid offensive upside.

I see them developing into NHL players putting up these types of numbers:

Reinhart - 30G : 40+A
Monahan - 30G : 30A

.... But I wouldn't be upset with Ekblad either!

Can't let the Flames become the Oilers. Defense has to be addressed at some point.

We really need that number one d-man moving forward to settle our overall defensive problems, and thats why we should grab Ekblad.
