It's an exceptional pick... The Kings consistently now get players with skill who drop.

yes, it seems that we got "Number one European Draft Prospect"
in Kopitar. Is he ready to play or he is some years in development? Will be be invited to the training camp?

before we start jumping up and down, check out this one scouting report for kopitar...

Quote:
As one scout said, "The kid could turn out to be a great player, but if you're picking that high, do you really want to take a chance on a kid from a country that has produced no NHL talent? Look at what happened to those Swiss first rounders. I don't care what you say, it's a gamble taking kids with unconventional backgrounds."

I see what you're saying jfont, but leading all scorers at the World Juniors (10 goals in 5 games) should tell us something about how this guy from an unconventional background stacks up against players from more traditional hockey countries. Plus word is he is not a jerk but a competitor with a great attitude.

I would agree with the above post if Kopitar wasn't lighting it up in the Swedish Junior league.....but he did.

The fact that his father is an assistant coach for the slovenian national team and that he speaks near-flawless english can only help tremendously. It seems that he adjusted to moving to another country at 17 with no real problems at all which is always a concern when you draft a european.

Oh, and if this kid is already 220 pounds like McKeens said then this is really the jackpot; most tall 17 year olds are like 180 at 17.

Congrats, Kings fans.
I can't believe my Canucks let this guy pass...he is the real deal!
You got the next Ziggy Palffy (at worst) and we got the next Brent Sopel (at best).

At 5 he was iffy, at 11 he's a no brainer. 6% of people who took the TSN pole said he'd go #2. Even though he's another Euro, I'm happy with the pick because he has more upside than any pick since Brown.

Had no idea he'd fall all the way to #11. You guys got a good pick.

Was trying to be optimistic about him falling to #15, but that's ok, we got our guy anyway.

You guys should thank Doug Wilson. He must've had some sort of massive drinking binge last night, so that when he got to the podium and meant to say "Anze Kopitar", he said "Devin Setoguchi" instead.

I can't believe I'm saying this as a Ducks fan, but I'm somewhat glad Kopitar landed in LA. You see, Kings brass probably has a good relationship with Regina Pats head coach Curtis Hunt(after he was at the developmental camp last year), and as a Pats fan, I'm hoping Kings brass can convince him to go to Regina and play NA hockey. It'd be awesome to see him out there in Regina. Hopefully the Kings can make it happen.

When Kopitar fell to #10 I was jumping around the room I was so excited. When I heard Nonis say Bourdon I nearly collapsed. Congrats to you guys though. I think you got a real gem.

Yeah, the Sharks made a weird move, as did the Dux (not taking Johnson), and the Rags (it seems they always trade up to take a player who should fall to them anyway.).

Atlanta's moves were pretty wise, though, stealing all those picks.

Thanks to this post / report from CUP4LA on LGK:

The Red Line Report gives you in-depth details on it's top 50 ranked prospects plus a few surprise players thay may sneak into the higher rounds at this year's NHL draft.

6. Anze Kopitar
There may be faster skaters in the draft, but few match speed with lightning quick moves as Kopitar does. Can handle the puck and change speeds and direction all at the same time. Dangerous every time he hits the ice and explosive with puck. Lethal scoring touch with quick release that fools goalies. Has hunger and passion for the game. Like a shark constantly circling its prey; jumps into holes and pounces on quick-strike counterattack opportunities. Deadly on breakaways and odd-man rushes. Scored rare triple this season by playing in the World U-18, U-20 and Senior Championships. Didn't look out of place in Austria and competed well against men. Has tendency to disappear vs. physical teams that play him tighter and rougher and don't give him extra space or time. Defence has improved, but still not NHL-calibre.
Projection: Dynamic, explosive first liner.
Style compares to: Dany Heatley

Another nice thing about Kopitar is he is one of the youngest players in the draft, born on August 24, 1987. Because his birthdate is after June 30, the Kings are given another potential development year if Kopitar needs it. The Kings can let him develop for three years and then have him in the NHL for seven years, which would give them a year of Kopitar at 27 years of age as opposed to a year of Kopitar at 20 years of age (new UFA age will be 27 or seven years of NHL experience).
