Way to go JFJ!!

Talk about setting a beautiful tone with our RFA's and UFA's early in the program. He's made the Leafs a better team up front at a cheap price right out of the blocks. That's gotta help to sign other players going forward.

This had better shut Domi up as well. No way in my books that you can now pay Tie anything close to what O'Neill signed for. Also makes it difficult to pay Roberts and Nieuy more than $1.5 million a season.

Absolutely awesome early move!

Not overly pleased about Rask, but this largely makes up for it.

I would have been willing to deal a 2nd rounder for O'Neill, would have been a bit tenuous about giving up a 1st for him though.

A 4th for O'Neill is quite nice though.
He had a definite off year last season, and his off-ice problems are well known.

Still.. he's a 30-40 goal scorer when he's on his game, and given his apparent desire to play here that may add a bit more incentive for him to overcome his problems.
If he's signed for less then the 3-3.5M I'd expect him to get on the open market I'm very pleased with this deal.

JFJ is starting to look like a very smart gm indeed.I think this is a great move
especially if the rumoured 1.5 mil a season for two seasons is true.
I think this would show roberts and niewy that 1-1.5 per is fair and man this is gonna raise eyebrows across the league.

As for Oneils drinkin problems all I gotta say is wait til roberts puts him through his workout routine and gets jeff motivated I think he will score more then ever.

All thats missing now is a big tough d man.

Thumbs up...O'Neill is a solid player...but the price-tag is even more awesome...I think JFJ did the right thing by making this trade...setting the bar for pricing before the UFA and RFA offers are made.

Lindros and Allison can't expect anything more than league minimum with incentives now.

Roberts and Nieuwendyk will have to sign for 1-1.5 now too if they really want to come back.

Looking good... (cue the carnival music)

Yeah, I've heard the 1.5 mil a year, 2 year deal also. Great signing/trade.

Yes, take that Joe Piskapoe! I like this, getting O'Neill at value, or even well below value, well leaf haters, nananana NAH!

There is no downside to this. At 1.5 million a season, you're getting a solid player. Great move from JFJ.

I think the trade was pretty classy by Carolina. I think the reason they didn't demand so much, and let Jeff go for a 4th round pick is because of the incident involving his brother, allowing Jeff to go back home and be with his family while not looking like total insincere business ****** about it all. Just my thoughts on the situation. Furthermore, since his brother apparently had such a big impact on his life, I look for him to play his heart out for his brother... I am not saying like that is my expectation of him and he better do it, just that's the type of guy I think O'Neil is... good trade today..

1.5 million is excellent, not taking up much cap space at all, leaving them with money to spend on top free agents. Great deal. I know everyone is saying this is a great deal for the Leafs, but Carolina was not tendering him a qualifying offer anyways, so of course they will not get much in return. What I am confused about is why they traded for him since Carolina was not going to qualify him? Why not just wait until he is an unrestricted free agent and then sign him? Oh well, 4th round pick is not very much anyways, I'm excited.

Regardless, I think they could have got at least a 2nd round pick from any other team in the league for Jeff.

By getting him today, they avoided the competition of having other teams throw a contract at him once he's on the open market.

Even though O'neill stated he would take less to come to T.O, if he got an offer from another team that was significanlty higher, it would be too much to pass up.

Smart thinking by JFJ...great pickup!

Even with that taken into account it seems an unusually cheap return, Todd White brought back a 95th overall selection, and I doubt many are going to argue White is a better player then O'Neill even taking O'Neill's 2.8M qualifying offer into account.

It seems quite surprising to me Carolina was unable to get a better offer then this.
I'm guessing they did this as a favor to O'Neill given his family troubles or else O'Neill was demanding well over 3M to sign elsewhere.

Either way, I'm very happy to see him here at 1.5M. Sundin will have a nice goal scorer to dish off to for once.

Great pickup by the Leafs. Hopefully we can get Roberts and Neiwy for around the same amount and then go get ourselves a defenceman

Love the fact that we snagged a goalie with our first pick and O'Neil who @ 1.5 mil is an awesome addition and perhaps a sign of things to come with homeboys asking for less to play in the big smoke!!!

JF gets a big thumbs up for this one!

Tuuka sounds like a good pick, he apparently didn't get the playing time he needed last year but has a ton of upside and besides, the finnish goalies have been giving the quebecois a run for their money lately with Kipper and the soon to be heir apparent in Atlanta.

To fill a crucial top-6 scoring slot with a guy making 1.5 million is awesome.

This really helps our cap, and Jeff is an excellent scorer to pair with Sundin.

Nice job JFJ

But Pep ..

Leaf fans have been hammered by the a player wanting to play in TO and take less money to do it .. What gives here ..

Carolina would have had to quailify him at $2.8 mil and we get him for $3 mil over two years .. I'd call that a discount ..

Lets hope this is the beginning of the Summer Sale bonanza, as we are going to need it ..

But Mess, how much more are we going to need? Do you see a lot of our UFAs not coming back? A nice addition to the blue line would be great, but how many do you think JFJ will be looking for up front? Who's out in your opinion: Joe? Gary? Alex? I don't believe they would go outside to replace Tie, so I don't see them replacing too much more unless one of those 3 are going somewhere.

BTW, on the topic of the thread, I think this is a good move, especially for a 4th. Probably would not have gotten him any cheaper as an UFA, so a 4th isn't a lot to save some cap room.
