Not a huge surprise there. O'Neill said he wanted to play in Toronto and Carolina's been trying to move him since before the trade deadline two years ago.

Its a conditional 4th round pick.

Leafs signed him to an extension (2 year deal).

Waiting on the figure though.

Great acquisition for the Leafs, as much as I loathe 'em. He came cheap and he's got a lot of hockey left in him. I don't know exactly how Toronto is going to fill out the rest of the roster on only $9 million bucks, but it'll be interesting to follow.

I would have been willing to deal a 2nd rounder for O'Neill, would have been a bit tenuous about giving up a 1st for him though.

A 4th for O'Neill is quite nice though.
He had a definite off year last season, and his off-ice problems are well known.

Still.. he's a 30-40 goal scorer when he's on his game, and given his apparent desire to play here that may add a bit more incentive for him to overcome his problems.
If he's signed for less then the 3-3.5M I'd expect him to get on the open market I'm very pleased with this deal.

Great acquisition...

$1,500,000 is a very good contract.

I think we'll see Roberts back in a Leaf Jersey in October now.

and thus Nieuwendyk will be back too

if O'Niell gets 1.5 million a year...holy **** this IS a new market NHL!

Nieuwendyk&Roberts for 2 million(1 each)

Could be great trade for the Leafs. Why Carolina did it? I mean 4th round pick?

Guy Legend:

I think we'll see moves like this by players going to teams they want to play for, IE: when someone wants to play for the Habs, Leafs, and other favourites from childhood, these lower contracts will be signed.

O'Neill on the open market signing in say...Nashville, likely would have asked for closer to $3,000,000.

It was more of a humanitarian trade, his brother died in a car crash 2 weeks ago and he's from Toronto. Nice move by Carolina.

Could be, if it's sort of a gesture of letting him go someplace he wants to play, then it is a classy move.

O'Neill 1.5 What are Neiuy, Roberts, Lindros, and

Allison worth, and D-man Rathje, would pay more than O'Neill got for those other forwards.

Carolina probably werent going to qualify him so they got a 4th rounder for nothing so both sides win.

I think your numbers are off.. they save 5 million on Owen Nolan's contract.

If you subtract Nolan's contract with Oneill's new one the Leafs save over 4 million. They now have 16 million to sign their own RFA's and ufa's

Right

$27,066,647 was our team Salary before when you included Nolan's $5,627,047 sallary.

now with nolan off the cap it's closer to 21.43 or just round up to 21.5

add O'Niell and Toronto is now at 23 million.

Not bad at all.

It may be classy and it's a great deal for the Leafs, but Carolina Hurricanes fans should be enraged that the organization didn't want to keep around arguably their best player (Staal is not there quite yet) for 2.8 million. It's not THAT expensive.
