No. The Leafs need a defenceman that is good defensively.

Would love for the Stars to get one of Franson or Gunnarsson. Any idea if they are on the block?

Nonis pulling Dreger's strings to get some publicity on players who he wants to see step their game up big time. Subtle way of threatening the young talent to shape up or ship out.

Need a dman more, agree.

But Clarkson sucks as a top 6 so much that Nonis must have entertained offers for top 6 fwds.

So damn true.
If trade phaneuf asap while his value is so high, save the massive overpayment contract he's going to get.

I doubt they're on the block but they're far from untouchable. We'd probably be interested in Chiasson or Ritchie.

JVR, Bolland (ideal 3rd liner), Rielly and Bernier. Everyone else can and should be moved. I don't understand why a proper rebuild has never been done here, the fans are ALWAYS loyal.
Well our top 6 shouldn't be our top priority. Unless we move Lupul and/or Clarkson (I'd argue "and" because we do have Raymond who can play top 6 and has played top 6 as much as Lupul has this season). Where would a top 6 forward fit with Bozak, Kessel, Kadri, Clarkson, JVR and Lupul (and Raymond) all in the mix still, plus the new guy(s).

We need depth defensemen, guys who can play second and third line. Gunnarsson and Phaneuf have done a great job on the top line, it's just our bottom two lines haven't got a single player who can play defense. I think the only guys who should be remaining on there is Rielly and Ranger (who can't be moved) as the 7th defenseman. Otherwise, we should move them all for picks, depth defensemen, prospects, a package with a top 6 forward for a top 6 forward, etc. (This is Gardiner, Franson, Fraser, Liles and Holzer if he doesn't play bottom pairing RHD for us). I like Gleason, and if he wants to come here, I think it'd be the only way to move Liles out. Otherwise,we may just need 2 new defensemen from either trades or callups (1 if we call up Holzer for the bottom pairing).

John Michael Liles
Carter Ashton

Tim Gleason
4th round pick 2014

Defensive Pairings:
Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Rielly-RHD
Gleason-Holzer or bottom pairing RHD
Ranger

At least it doesn't look as bad as it did before defensively.

Trade Clarkson to Edmonton. He already had to impress a lot to get my approval, and he's doing worse than I expected (so he's doing REALLY bad).

I'd be okay with giving up one of those two, preferably Chiasson as I believe Ritchie will be the better player.

Clarkson has one of the worst contracts in the league.

Kessel is ...... m'eh at best

To sign Phanuef at 7 x 7. Bwahahaha that would be as bad as Clarkson.

Phaneuf is worth 5 years at 6 mil at the absolute most and even then I probably wouldnt do it.

I agree with those above. If I was DN, Phaneuf would be gone while his value is relatively high.

Only half this statement can be true. If he's going to get a massive overpayment contract, his value isn't going to be so high, is it now?

You guys should move Franson. He's not good.
Think Nonis would want a young top 6 forward. Not sure if there are teams willing to pay such a high price

Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Gardiner have been pretty good in close game situations:

Problem is the bad PK, and our other 3 dmen. Gardiner certainly needs to be more consistent, but he had a stretch of games where he averaged ~24-25 minutes a game and looked great.

Really surprised at the regression in Gardiner. I thought he was going to be a stud but he really looks weak defensively this year. Maybe a change of scenery would get him back on track as a couple of years ago he played with a lot more confidence.

The Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk board should be renamed the Occasional Gardiner.

Moving gardiner will bite Toronto in the ass so hard. That better not happen, he's the only one worth watching leafs recent games

I don't know if the number of posts above are driven by agenda or ignorance. What I find very frustrating is seeing Gardiner being compared with Phaneuf. To mindlessly compare TOI is probably the most dishonest nonsense ever seeing that we've had countless threads on how TOI are not equal.

Phaneuf and Gunnarsson play the toughest minutes on the team. For that reason, we may see both of them make errors. On the other hand, Gardiner is sheltered and is relied upon to generate offence. Interestingly, he's producing less than Phaneuf offensively, and has been exploited numerous times on the defensive end.

We're dealing with very different assignments here. Gardiner hasn't made best use of his opportunities and if he can play like a responsible PB ala McDonagh, we'd have him on the top pairing. Since Phaneuf isn't really a QB, it'd be nice to see him paired with a creative partner while in a two-way role.

I can see both Kadri and Gardiner being traded eventual, not JVR or Reilly though.

Can you name any defensemen better (or equal to) than Phaneuf who signed a UFA contract under 6m for 5 years?

Try not going back to the Bobby Orr days though...

Dan Hamhuis signed a 6 year deal in 2010-11 at $4.5 million AAV.

edler is pretty much the best d man on the nucks when healthy

i know other fans might say hamhuis or don cherry has you thinking bieksa but its edler , he has the best offensive instints and he can play real strong in his end
