WOW...BIG $. Congrats on cashing in on a career start to a season! Smart by the Blues not to go long term.

Good deal for the Blues, even if he doesn't keep up his torrid scoring pace. Not a whole lot of risk with that term, and he brings so much to the team.

Good deal for both sides. Steen gets to stay in St.Louis who will very likely be a cup contender for several years, and Blues can keep Steen for reasonable price, and it's just 3 years too.

That might seem like a bad contract to some but if this didn't happen now and Steen actually would get near 45 goals and 80 points this season he would have gotten 7-8m from open market without a doubt.

I think he would have been looking at 5 or 5.25 per season without the offensive explosion this year, so fair deal imho.

Really good deal for St.L imo .

Never thought it was more than a wish so not devastated but still... he would have been really nice here.

Good for Steen too , good guy great player when healthy , hopefully he stays that way.

He's signed through next season. Pens fan came into a trade thread recently and offered Despres+ for him, FWIW.

When did I judge him by his points? When did I say his contract isn't worth it?

I may be wrong, but that may have been before Despres got called up and started playing like Jesus for the Pens. It's not a bad deal, but I don't know if I'd do it.

Yep, good god. He's a great player, but they're paying him in a year that he's grossly overperforming usual expectations. I could even see $5 mil AAV being justifiable, but even that's more of a "UFA market value" figure in my mind.

@Everyone who's saying "lol 2 way play justifies it": no. Players get paid when they produce offensively, and only very rarely do big paydays come as a result of being good defensively.

Mostly personal preference. I don't think it's a stretch to believe that he could be a productive player though his age 35 season.

AAV is probably 800K more than the Blues wanted it, and the length is 2-3 years shorter than Steen probably wanted it. I'll take it.

Really weird timing for this extension, but it's a nice contract regardless so whatever. Maybe a very slight overpayment influenced by his current season, but there's nothing wrong with that deal. Especially with the cap heading the way it is.

Good time to negotiate a deal if you're Steen. It's big money but Steen has been worth all of that and more this season. Blues couldn't afford to lose him.

It's weird timing in the sense that he stated he wanted to focus on playing and not worry about negotiation. My guess is that the Blues realizes just how important he is to the team and decided to make a move. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find out that we offered him more than we wanted to in order to lock him up now and not have to worry about losing him.

That's a lot of money, I never thought I'd see Steen making close to 6M. His performance thus far has definitely earned it, hopefully he can stay solid for the Blues. Very much liking the term though, it was smart of Armstrong to give up a little more money for a lower risk term if he completely bottoms out.

Does this make him the second highest paid Blue (is that the right term?) after Pietro?

Interesting. IMO Steen would've gotten a deal similar to Flippula if he kept his usual pace so the Blues are getting a good deal.

For next season yes. Petro-Steen-Bouwmeester in that order

The bad: look at his career numbers, he's more like an 50 pt player with a good 2-way game. Might be a 1 season wonder in terms of production this year. Then it's an okay contract.

The good: a lot of Swedes tend to reach their potential and peak at ~ 30. So he could be one of those. If that's the case then it's a good deal.

That's a pretty solid cap structure. Good for the Blues, I'm assuming there's a bit of a non-spoken thing where AP is going to be the highest paid player on the team (similar to the Sedins in Vancouver).
