Why don't we just sign 13 players?

1 million for Nieuwendyk
1 million for Roberts
0.5 million for Domi
0.5 million for Poni
0.75 for Nik

so far I've used 2.75 million for 5 players leaving me with 13.25 million left for 10 players

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Domi

Kab-Cab
Klee

Belfour
Tellan(he's signed right?)

That D needs some bodies

0.5 million for Pilar

this means I have 12.75 left for 9 players

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Domi

Kab-Cab
Pilar-Klee

Ed
Edd & Eddy

Considering Ozonlish re-signed for 2.75 million I imagine the Leafs could get Leetch or a comparable #1 dman for 2 million, this of course isn't refering to Niedermayer or Foote who will command more, though I wouldn't say Foote is out of the question I think we'll see a Leetch or Gonchar signing instead of Foote, to make things easy I'll say Leetch at 2 million per year.

2 million- Leetch

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Domi

Leetch-Cab
Kab-Klee
Aki-Pilar

Eagle
Mr.Telly

Now lets look at our forwards, we have 10.75 million for 8 players.

I think Steen could have a Stajan like year so lets add him

0.5 for Steen

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Steen(one of them centers the other wings it)
Domi

Leetch-Cab
Kab-Klee
Pilar

Eddie
Mikael

now I have 10.25 million left for 7 players.

I think Colaiacovo needs a contract, but I might be wrong I'll assume he makes the 0.5 like my other rookies.

9.75 left for 6 players

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Steen
Domi

Leetch-Cab
Kab-Klee
Cola-Pilar

old fart
young fart

now we need 4th liners to ice a team

I get Wilm and Perrot at 0.5 each or 1 million for the both of them.

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Steen
Perrott-Wilm-Domi

Leetch-Cab
Kab-Klee
Cola-Pilar

Batman
Robin

8.75 left and I need 5 players

well lets make it 8.25 and sign Kilger for half a million

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Steen
Kilger-Wilm-Domi

extra: Perrott

Leetch-Cab
Kab-Klee
Sodapop-Pilar

Butch
Sundance

so 8.25 million left and I need 4 players, I can average 2 million per now if I wanted and stay under the cap.

Now I think that D needs just a touch of Defense to it.

so you know what screw it, we're getting Footer at 3.25 million cause I said so!

Roberts-Sundin-O'Niell
SKY
Tucker-Stajan-Steen
Kilger-Wilm-Domi

X- Lefty

Leetch-Foote
Cab-Kab
Pepsi-Klee

X- Pilar

Bob Cole
Harry Neale

wowzers what a free agent signing by the Leafs! lets look at them now

5 million left, 3 players to sign.

well lets now that I think of it maybe Telly isn't signed, so just to be sure lets make it 4.5 left 3 players to sign.

so what now? well there's a whole contingent of 3rd/4th line players available.

hell maybee we don't qualify Pilar and get Rathje too!

It's all unrealistic though, I'm an armchair GM making split second signings with players but the Leafs could Ice a team like that pretty much with some slight changes.

I decided to stay away from the cliche Lindros/Allison signings.

Roberts-Sundin-O'Neill
Lindros-Antropov-Mogilny
Allison-Nieuwendyk-Ponikarovsky
Tucker-Stajan-Mikael Samuelsson
Wilm, Kilger

Kaberle-Foote
McCabe-Pilar
Colaiacovo-Berg
Todd Simpson, younger defensive d-man who does not receive a qualifying offer

Belfour
Tellqvist

This could fit under the cap.

I'd be ok with that (switch Allison and Nik though ). Basically we need two more wingers and a #2 C, plus a top 4 dman. I would be fine if a guy like Stajan was centering our 3rd line...Tucker also is a 3rd line calibre player ... Ferguson will have to decide whether he wants quality or quantity (The lindros', allisons', roberts' who might come cheap). Lets hope at least one of Berg or Nik sign long term deals at a reduced cost (below what they need to be qualified for)...

XXX-Sundin-O'Neill
Antropov-XXX-XXX
Tucker-Stajan-Ponikarovsky
Whoever does well in camp

Kaberle-McCabe
XXX-Klee
Colaiacovo-Berg
Pilar

The rest can be filled with guys like Wilm, Kilger and ****.

Can't wait till Monday afternoon

Considering Mogilny is healthy enough and willing to take a heavy pay cut....

I remember him saying that he would take a big paycut.. I think it was an article.. Can anyone back me up on that?

Anyways... I read that he is skating in Russia right now.. So we'll see. It'll be great to get him back if he's ready to go. If not then it'll be sad to see him go, but it's time. He was my favorite out of the lineup (when he was healthy).

With the recent signing of O'Niell and possibly losing Mogilny, the Leafs would lack a finesse winger. Who is on the market? What would he cost? Be realistic...

I'm still thinking Murray could become a Leaf. But that's only if everything came crashing down in Boston. Allison is a good 3rd Line C, he could also come cheap.

There are too many questions right now. I just want September to come NOW.

EDIT: I personally like guys like Wilm and Kilger. They did pretty good. Plugging them in every so often on lines 3 and 4 wouldn't hurt much at all.

Maximum 23, but we can go with 21 and have more money. At least, this is what the media has been reporting and it seems sensible.

No. Nik needs to play centre and not have his position changed all the time. Allison cannot be relied on to play a Top 6 role with his injury issues, but if he plays well and remains injury-free, then only may he be a fixture on the 2nd line.

Yep, definately can't wait for Monday though to figure out who the missing pieces of the puzzle will be.

Lol. Me, too. I usually find you can just trade a bunch of crap for the first seven picks in the draft. Do that for about four years in a row and your set for life.

Oh, and sign all the top free agents.

It's so easy to be a GM.

-I agree that Nik cant be moved around a lot. Nik was winger last year and played some of his best hockey with Mats and Mogs on the wing..Less skating required too. Leave him there.

-Allison when healthy is a PPG player. When he's in the lineup he will/should get 2nd line ice time...shouldnt be afraid to play him out of fear that he gets injured again. If you get allison and Nieuwy then you can always hope one of them is healthy at any given time...

$9=Gary-Sundin-Jeff
$5=Jason-Joe-Eric
$3.5=Tucker-Antropov-Stajan
$1.5=Poni-Kilger-Domi
Forwards: $19

$5.8=Kaberle-McCabe
$2.4=Pilar-Klee
$1.5=Berg-Colaiacovo
0.5=Prospect D-man
Defense: $10.2

$5.1=Belfour-Tellqvist

Around $34.3 million

Leaves a few million if you want to upgrade.

Options: Kariya, Rafalski, Gratton, Gonchar, not all. How would Gonchar feel about pairing up with Klee again?

Edit: Does JFj have a good relationship with Demitra? I just don't see him coming cheap, none of the non-existent home-town discounts there.

When its all said and done, Leafs should be looking at 36-37 payroll come training camp. Leave a few million incase something happens during the season or some flexibility for the trade deadline.

Well, there are going to be more added to this pool anyway.

Would Peter want to live in the fishbowel/fishbowl?

I thought about that while I was typing, but thought, what the heck it can get pretty ripe in Leaf land.

Edit for my line-ups I was trying to think of some good gritty guys for the 3rd/4th line center position and oculdn't think of anyone except maybee Jim Dowd, but I was only looking at UFA's before buyouts, after the Buyouts what about Gratton for the 3rd/4th line?

Hrmm sorry for the double post, but I noticed this thread after I had posted this in a much less applicable one. Feel free to delete the other on in the O'neill thread.

What about something like this, I've done it in stages so that if you find something particularly off kilter or stupid it can be rectified at that part rather than scrapping the whole idea. I very well may be underestimate/overestimate salaries, as I cannot garner if Jeff's signing will effect the market, or be seen as an isolated situation.

The forwards are very hard to call, since we only have 4 signed. Sundin/Tucker/Stajan and the newest Leaf.

Mats Sundin $6.84 million
*Owen Nolan $5,627,047
Ed Belfour $4.56 million
Bryan McCabe $3.458 million
Tomas Kaberle $2.28 million
Ken Klee $1.9 million
Darcy Tucker $1.596 million
Matt Stajan $805,600

Approx 21, 439 (note I cut Nolan out of this total)

Add in Jeff, and for the sake of simplicity, we're at 22 million, with 17 million to play with.

So, 2 centres and a winger. If we get either Allison or Lindros (I'm iffy about both, but quite frankly I don't think we'd offer them much cash, so it's little risk). That would leave us with 3 c's, and IMO we could bring Steen up, though I'm not sure if Quinn would be comfortable with 2 young C's with Stajan/Steen. Plus, I really can't see Steen being effective on anything but the top 2 lines. So, we'll move Stajan off of C, which isn't to his benefit, but we can find some better players to fill his slot. I'd also resign Joey, for lets say 1 mil (might be too little)

I'll also assume Allison for 1 mil, and Steen for 700k.

Sundin
Allison
Joey
Steen (don't like him here but w/e)

I'm not a big fan of having Tucker on the first line, so I'd put him on the second with Allison, and I'd put Jeff with Sundin on the right.

blank Sundin O'Neill
Tucker Allison blank
blank Joey blank
Stajan Steen Blank

24.7 Million spent.

Resign Antropov, Poni, Kilger, for 8/7/7 hunderd thousand each respectively. Sign Roberts for 1 mil, again perhaps a bit of an underestimation. Domi for 1 mil (again perhaps too low, but not in my opinion)

28.9 mil spent, and the lines.

Roberts/Sundin/O'Neill
Tucker/Allison/blank
Poni/Nieuy/Antropov (did pretty well last year)
Stajan/Steen/Domi

Reserve: Kilger

I'd then chase a premier FA forward to fill in the right side of line 2. Then, depending on the cash left over, look for a solid D-man like Foote. Sign Coli, and then I don't care who the 6th is.

That's my rough idea..

Note that I'm also trying to retain some cap flexibility, but if a good offer came along for some good players, cheap, I'd be all over it.
