Version 2.0.
It's a little bit too close to the cap for comfort. But hopefully Joe and Gary will sign for a little bit less, and Allison's contract is bonus heavy in accordance with that 100 injury days clause.

Tucker($1.596mil) -Mats Sundin($6.84mil)- O'Neil($1.5mil)
Roberts($1.75mil)-Allison($2.0mil)-Antropov($1.2mil)
Ponikarovsky($1.0mil)-Nieuwendyk($1.75mil)-Stajan($805,600)
Kilger($500,000)-Steen($800,000)-Domi($1.0mil)
Extra: Wilm/Kukemburg/AHLer($450,000)

McCabe($3.458mil)-Kaberle($2.28mil)
Colaiacovo($858,800)- Foote($2.5mil)
Berg($1mil)- Klee($1.9mil)

Belfour($4.56 mil)
Tellqvist($650,000)

Total: $38,398,400

I read a recent article that said current contracts are averaged out as to effect on Cap Space ..

The used Mats Sundin as an example and he has $6.3 mil , $6.8 mil , $4.5 mil left on his 3 year deal ..

So that is $18.1 mil / 3 years and/or $6.03 mil cap space effect .. Leafs get a $500K cap advantage in the first 2 years ..

Apparently this is to avoid the front end or backend loaded contracts in the new CBA ..So if you pay a player 2 mil in year one and 6 mil in a year 2 thinking you are manipulating the cap that is actually a 4 mil cap hit each year in fact .. So you might as well pay the 4 mil if it counts ..

Damn, this was so much simpler before the cap. But the averaging of salaries does help out with sundin's contract in this case.

Well Dallas just screwed up everything. Zubov got 4 mill/year for three years! That makes Foote and Aucoin 4- 5-6 mill players. Thanks Dallas I guess the Hawks dream of getting Aucoin is gone.

Domi 650K
Kilger 500K
Stajan 850K
Coli 850K
Poni 550K
Antropov 750K
Piliar 750K
Telli 700K

5.6 Million

Kariya Sundin Almo
Roberts Newy Oneil
Tucker Stajan Antropov
Domi Kilger Poni

McCabe Kaberle
Klee Foote
Coli Pilar

Eddie

Foote 3.75 Million
Newy 1.75
Roberts 1.75
Kariya 2 million
Mogilny 1.75

Yep, they set the bar pretty high. Top end dmen could go for 3.5-5 now.

Jason Allison will be a Leaf this week. With our cap constraints, his desire to play in his hometown, and there being so little to lose by signing him to a low dollar heavy bonus laden contract, it's a no brainer in my books. He's younger than Lindros and is less of risk v. multiple concussions.... put another way, imagine Lindros as a Leaf in a playoff series v. the Flyers ... I rest my case.

Other Thoughts:

Mike Rathje. He's affordable, and just what we're looking for on the defence. For those that don't know it, his wife is from Toronto. I think the Leafs have a shot at signing him for something in the range of 2 million if interested.

Anson Carter. Toronto boy who has size and has shown what he can do in the past. Can be had cheaply and would look good on our 3rd line IMHO, with the hope that he can regain his A game.

Adam Foote a Toronto native .... it'll come down to how much he wants to play for Toronto in terms of taking a bit of cut v. what he could make on the market.

Glen Murray is very possible as well.

Alexi Zhitnik is a free agent ..... hmmmmm.... lose Berg and Klee, add Zhitnik and Cola for total cost of about $1.75 million....

Bobby Holik bought out ... so it's not like he needs the money .... can you see him
as our 2nd line center.... for say $3 million ?

Teemu Selanne as a dark horse candidate ? You know he's going to be signed by somebody for cheap dollars. Could he regain his form on a line with Sundin ? Would he look so bad as a second or third liner for $1.5 million ?

On another note, anybody catch the fact that it looks like the Senators may have lost Volchenkov who has signed with a Russian team for the year ... he's got an out clause but looks like he signed for $1.5 million in his home country where he pays alot less income tax ... the Sens are going to have to pony up a pretty big chunk of cash to have him play on the team this year.

$2.4=Pilar-Klee
$1.5=Berg-Colaiacovo

Defense: $10.2

$5.1=Belfour-Tellqvist

Around $34.3 million

Leaves a few million if you want to upgrade.

Options: Kariya, Rafalski, Gratton, Gonchar, not all. How would Gonchar feel about pairing up with Klee again?

Edit: Does JFj have a good relationship with Demitra? I just don't see him coming cheap, none of the non-existent home-town discounts there.
I wish I was on a first name basis with hockey players.

Apparently, once they get dropped from the first two lines, they lose first-name status.

How will the NHLs bottom line effect free agent signings and the cap? If, as many believe, the NHL will make less money this year due to the lockout, it is possible the cap could be closer to 35 million. That will have a big effect on the Leafs.

You know eq.. that's a pretty solid lineup, likely as solid as this team can possibly get this year. Good job.
