Team performance since 2007-2008

Hi,

I wanted to know where the Habs stood in comparison to other teams in the last 5 years. I made spreadsheet, and I attribued points in the following fashion: 1 pt per standing in regular season (team with biggest amount of points got 30, team with the smallest amount got 1), and the following for the playoffs:
- losing in 1st round = 5 pts
- losing in 2nd round = 10 pts
- losing in Conference finals = 15 pts
- losing in Cup finals = 20 pts
- winning the Stanley cup = 30 pts.

Although totally arbitrary, I felt that this point attribution would give the appropriate weight for playoffs (it is of course debatable). The results do seem to match what I thought of the last 5 years.

1 - PIT - 240
2 - DET - 231
3 - CHI - 218
4 - BOS - 215
5 - SAJ - 213
6 - VAN - 192
7 - WAS - 186
8 - PHI - 176
9 - NYR - 157
10 - NJD - 151
11 - LAK - 144
12 - MTL - 143
13 - ANA - 139
14 - NSH - 127
15 - PHX - 119
16 - STL - 118
17 - OTT - 108
18 - CLG - 100
19 - DAL - 96
20 - BUF - 93
21 - MIN - 88
22 - CAR - 84
23 - COL - 73
24 - TBL - 60
25 - FLO - 55
26 - TOR - 55
27 - CLB - 52
28 - ATL/WIN - 45
29 - NYI - 39
30 - EMD - 33

Of course, this does not account for the "recent" rise of St-Louis and LA, for example, and the "recent" fall of Detroit, but it gives a goo idea. Montreal has been slightly better than the average, not far from the first third of the league (but not very far from the last third neither...).

What do you guys think?

Weird, that's exactly what I thought of first, then scrolled down and saw your post.

I'm curious as to why you picked 2007-08 as the starting point? Wouldn't 2005-06 be better?

Cool comparison, nice to see we're in the top half of the league at least!

It would be interesting to compare this result with the 5 previous years. And to the other 5 previous years. I'm pretty sure we would find out that the Habs are on the rise!
