I wanted to know where the Habs stood in comparison to other teams in the last 5 years. I made spreadsheet, and I attribued points in the following fashion: 1 pt per standing in regular season (team with biggest amount of points got 30, team with the smallest amount got 1), and the following for the playoffs:
- losing in 1st round = 5 pts
- losing in 2nd round = 10 pts
- losing in Conference finals = 15 pts
- losing in Cup finals = 20 pts
- winning the Stanley cup = 30 pts.
Although totally arbitrary, I felt that this point attribution would give the appropriate weight for playoffs (it is of course debatable). The results do seem to match what I thought of the last 5 years.
Of course, this does not account for the "recent" rise of St-Louis and LA, for example, and the "recent" fall of Detroit, but it gives a goo idea. Montreal has been slightly better than the average, not far from the first third of the league (but not very far from the last third neither...).
