I have to admit that at first I was not a fan due to his horrid defensive play. He has totally turned that around and changed his wait for the puck attitude to I'll get it myself. He also has truly adapted to making better use of little time and little space. I see him as a future leading point scorer of the Blues each year. I think he's that good. I've seen a lot of hockey and this kid has got "it"

I don't really miss Perron that much because of Schwartz's improved play.

Poll: Should his next contract be a bridge deal (2 years) or should the Blues lock him up with a longer contract?

I usually don't like long term deals for youngsters, but I'd be willing to take a chance on Schwartz if the term is right. If we lock him in for 5-6 years it could end up being an absolute steal down the road.

And I agree with others, he has captain material written all over him.

If long-term, what's a reasonable pay? 4 mil per for 5-6 years? That would be a steal. Anything more would be an overpayment at this point. But I think a 2-year deal for 5-5.5 mil total would be what we'll end up seeing.

I'll get right on that

EDIT: Added to this thread. The question asks how long you would like his next contract to be, but it could always be changed to a prediction poll if that's preferable.

Yeah somewhere around the Oshie figure was what I was thinking. If he is willing to potentially sacrifice some term down the road for long term security, I'd jump at it.

Worth noting though, I want to wait until the end of the season to see if he can maintain a level of consistency. He is still young and it's reasonable to wonder if this current point streak is a flash in the pan. I don't think so, but some level of skepticism is certainly reasonable.

He's got the hockey sense, the skill and has always had the great work ethic and determination. This current scoring streak is NOT a flash in the pan. He's only going to get more and more effective. He'll be a regular 70 point scorer. He's going to get more PP time. His shot will improve. He will get more separation. He's still in the late stages of adjusting to The NHL. He'll reach another (higher) plateau. I see only better things coming for him. If The Blues can lock him up for 6 years at $4 - $4.5 million per, they should do it.

I don't really like giving longer terms to younger guys but with Schwartz you have to wonder how much better he would get over the 2 years if you just gave him a bridge deal. Something around 5-6 years is best scenario IMO.

How many years until Schwartz hits UFA? I believe in his case it would be 7 years of service as a Blue. Does Schwartz's first year eat up one of his RFA years, he only played in 7 games for us.

No, that first year doesn't count as an accrued season. He'll be an UFA in 2019, so 5 more RFA seasons.

We should be going long term on his next deal, but we won't. We'll get a "discount" couple of seasons at around $2.75m and then have to pay him big money after that.

Thanks for the clarification.

A 4 year deal in this case wouldn't be too bad then. Sign him to a similar deal to Perron, 4 x 3.75 per, and when the contract is up he is still an RFA.

Sign him for 3 years and see if he can keep it up..... He is one of my favourite players right now, no doubt. So clutch.

Schwartz is now shooting at a pace to score about 30 goals. But he should have a better 2nd half than his 1st, because early in the season, he was still learning his way. He's now an effective NHL offensive forward, and he'll only get better.

The Blues might have 4 or 5 30-goal scorers this season. Steen, Backes, Schwartz and Tarasenko should probably make that mark, and Stewart is a possibility, if he gets on a couple more hot streaks.

Shattenkirk, Bouwmeester and Pietrangelo might ALL score over 50 points. This will be an amazing year.

Schwartz is a legitimate first line left winger. Absolutely no doubt in my mind. 20+ games of PPG play is not a hot streak. This is the player that we have for the future. He plays in all situations and thrives. His rapid development is nothing short of spectacular. It reminds me quite a bit of Petro in the second half of the 2011-12 season where he took the jump from a great player to an elite player. Schwartz has jumped from a good player to a great one. He's just so impressive every game.
