Theres a reason why the Leafs are garbage and its because of constant bad decisions. Its embarrassing watching these Leafs these past years with no signs of improvement, just consistent poor management and evaluations so your right.
Having higher expectations for an elite player is ridiculous. Leafs nation as the most loyal fan base in sports is learning to accept losing and that's sad buddy.
Leafs are so desperate for a winner that they have turned an average defender and disguised him as a #1 defencemen and Captain worthy just because thats what they so deperatly need and the player and agent used this to get him 7M per and have his life set!!!

Absolutely! Short years would be better for a guy like this. Toronto is going to regret such a long term. I would give him more at shorter years.

It's a good deal in regards to term and AAV. He's only 28 and the cap will continue to go up. I'm going to go shower now after saying something positive about the Leafs

I hate the NTC/NMC for any player though. It doesn't show a player that is 100% committed; it just shows if they want out they can decide who they get traded too. But its part of the NHL now

fair deal. good for both parties. Leafs D would be a mess without Phaneuf. Need to trade for good enough D to help out Phaneuf now.

Also, for those saying 7 years is too long, he would have easily gotten that for MORE money in UFA from someone like EDM.

Just give him eh? Just say "there's your 4 year deal Dion, sign it kthx"?
You don't "give him" anything of the sort. You only offer Dion 4 years and he walks to another club that would gladly give him max term.

I doubt Phaneuf is going to regress by 35 at a greater rate than the cap will increase.

It's a fair deal. I wouldn't call Dion an elite #1 but he is a #1. He committed to Toronto and they gave him a contract so that he can retire a Leaf.

how can this be bad when you compare it to the Clarkson debacle

I like Phaneuf and would like him on the habs on our second defensive pairing with Emelin but 7m over 7 years is a bit much I think - hopefully Subban will come in around 8m something and he's wayyyy better than Phaneuf

EVERY team would love Phaneuf on their team at 7x7. Most ppl are just bashing the contract because A) it's Phaneuf and B) it's the Leafs.

Good job Nonis.

There's very few guys that are "elite," they are in Norris contention every year. They are also going to get paid... taking that into consideration, this seems fine. Especially with the cap shooting up exponentially (or at least it feels like it).

That's a great way to look at it.

Not bad, the Leafs will have more room with the cap going up and Tucker finally coming off their books.

Wasn't it around 5-5 to 6 or what was the saying HE CAN WALK.
Now we'll hear how 7 mil for 7 yrs is a great signing.
Lol who is 'we' and who did they hear that from? HF posters? I never once heard in the media that he would be taking a pay cut. You guys are silly.

I personally think Phaneuf has all the talent in the world and the hockey IQ of a squirrel on waterskis but 7 mill a year is probably under market value for him if he were to hit UFA. People who think it's overpaid and are laughing need to consider a couple variables.

Captain of the team
6.5 million previous contract
Toronto's #1D
Prime age of his career
All UFA years
Cap going up considerably over the term

If he were to hit the open market I have little doubt someone would give him 8 million over 7, especially a team desperate to attract a UFA. Side note, if there isn't a NTC on it, that would be the best situation for Toronto.

... The way I see it, guys like Zajac and Steen are at nearly the same cap hit as Zetterberg now.

It is, as long as the relative cap hit diminishes faster than Phaneufs play than its a great deal

7/49 for Phaneuf, 7/36.75 for Clarkson, 5/21 for Bozak. Leafs are going nowhere with these kinds of contracts.

I was kind of hoping Dallas would kick the tires around Phaneuf this offseason, maybe lure him in as an actual top-pairing d-man, one we've lacked for years.

Still, in a way I'm also glad Nill isn't shelling out that amount of coin for so long.

They wont have money to be a player in free agency, but should be relatively alright when it comes to signing their own guys.

Phaneuf - Subban would be an insane top pairing...especially now that Dion is focused on D.

Why wouldn't they? They'll have 21 million in change with 13 players signed a bunch of guys in the minors that can step up and fill roles if they were to go after a UFA. This doesn't change a thing for Free Agency in Toronto.
