While I can certainly where you're coming from I'd like to hear your explanation

You're a rather well-spoken and articulate poster so I am very curious

I happen to think Bill Clinton is the epitome of "right place, right time" but I can't say I think less of him for it; I will say that anyone who thinks him a genius certainly shows a limited sense of perspective

Most overrated would have to be JFK to me

Thank you, and no problem.

I guess I wonder what he actually achieved: low interest rates, deregulation of the financial sector, welfare "reform"... Sure he presided over a good economy (good for some, anyway), but what did he do of lasting value?

I'll give him credit for presiding over peacemaking in Norther Ireland, S-CHIP (child health insurance program), the handling of the Balkans, and appointing the awesome Ruth Bader Ginsburg. But he failed on I-P diplomacy (squandering the Israeli Labor Party's political capital which it still hasn't recovered from), failed to lead the world to avert genocide in Rwanda, failed to effectively reform the military, failed to reform health insurance, and passed the buck on nearly all serious liberal policy initiatives.

At the same time, he presided over a pretty hard right turn in economic policy, the consequences of which haunt us now.

I'm not saying President Obama has achieved much more, but Obama succeeded the second worst President ever (the worst being Hoover), and that's saying something. Also, Bill Clinton has this luminary status thing in New York that's pretty obnoxious.

I agree with Dan-O about Clinton. Though I put Coolidge and Harding as worse than Hoover.

I'm no expert, but I was under the impression Hoover wasn't that bad. Just got left holding the bag when the dung hit the fan.

Pretty much, I put most of the blame of the Depression on Coolidge. However, Hoover had a bad attitude (he and his wife had black-tie dinners every night), ordered the Bonus Army off the National Mall (which resulted in WWI veterans being killed, not great for PR). He also passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, which backfired and made the economic situation worse.

He did try some tax increases and some public works, but he tried to maintain a message of "personal responsibility" which made Coolidge so popular and that didn't go over too well.

Hoover was an engineer, not a politician. He was totally unprepared to handle such a crisis. He had only been in office for 5 months before the stock market crashed; it's really hard to blame him for the cluster***** that was Wall Street in the 1920s (He was Secretary of Commerce under Coolidge, but Coolidge apparently never listened to him).

I must admit to being somewhat puzzled. We have one poster who favor socialism but aspires to be a small business owner. We have another small business owner who subscribes to neo liberalism.

I don't get it.

I don't get it.
Fabian socialism is just the implementation of democratic socialism through small and generally incremental means. I am generally a market socialist, I don't see anything wrong with running or having a business. I do have a problem with businesses that use their power to exploit their workers.
