Newy and Roberts Pathers

Roberts, Nieuwendyk sign in Florida

The Toronto Maple Leafs have just become a lot younger.

Sportsnet has learned NHL veterans Gary Roberts and Joe Nieuwendyk have agree to 2 year deals with the Florida Panthers.

So be it, so long guys and thanks for your efforts which were much appreciated. Won't be winning any Cups with Florida however.

Should free up about $3 million dollars for one player v. two. Satan ? Murray ? Allison ? and others now can be pursued.

We just got alot younger any which way you cut it. I can live with that and actually kind of like it. No way that I could justify giving the 2 graybeards a 2 year contract.

O.K. JFJ, go to work!!

da hell?

Florida?

Well best of luck to them and to the Florida Panthers but what happened to make them go?

They said on more then one occasion they'd take paycuts to stay here in Toronto, so was it a lack of interest from JFJ? or what?

guess this means we're in the market for Forwards, Welcome to Toronto Lindros.

Sportsnet has learned NHL veterans Gary Roberts and Joe Nieuwendyk have agree to two-year deals with the Florida Panthers.

Both Roberts and Nieuwendyk signed for $2.25 million a year.

Roberts had 28 goals and 20 assists with Toronto in 2003-04, while Nieuwendyk had 22 goals and 28 assists in 64 games played.

It's for the best.

We needed to get younger, and handing out 2-year deals to GRob and Joe wasn't going to accomplish that.

Good that they didn't go to Ottawa.

$2.25 million per year for 2 years ?

Sorry but IMHO in the new CBA that's overpaying for the product. Also makes a mockery of those 2 players being prepared to take less to stay in Toronto, unless JFJ was really offering them squat.

For $2.25 million a piece, I wish both of them luck winning a Cup in Florida ... enjoy the sun and the sand guys and thanks for the memories...

Ok you would have to think JFJ is going after at least one big name UFA Forward now, to put on the first line.

Domi is almost certainly gone now...

Florida Overpaid

Florida overpaid.

I am glad it was not Ottawa

The deal was a little quick? Did Keenan jump the gun by a few days.

Domi should be gone with the qualifying of both Parrott and Belak

With our qualified RFA's our salary is apprximately $30 million and we need two scoring forwards and a good defencemen for the remaining $9 million

I'm not surprised they came together, but they got a little more then I was expecting. Personally I'm not sure their worth more then 1.75M/1yr.

A touch longer and higher then is probably safe. Still,Florida probably isn't expecting to contend for the cup in the next 2 years, nor spend to the limits of the cap... so if their looking for guys that can contribute decently while providing excellent role models for their younger players they could have done a whole lot worse.

Roberts will give 110% every night out, and is a fine leader... perhaps he can help to add a little intensity to the extremely talented yet eternally underperforming Huselius.
Nieuwendyk did a fantastic job Centering Antropov and Ponikarovsky on the SKY line, and IMHO played a major role in Poni's unexpectedly strong season.

All considered, given the role their expected to play and that Florida likely isn't looking to be a serious contender it's probably a decent signing.
Overpayment yes, but if their not spending to the cap limit or expecting Roberts and Nieuwendyk to be the final pieces of a cup contender then it may well make sense for them.

Two exciting players who were fun to cheer for so it's obviously tough to see them go.

But honestly I can say I'm not that dissapointed. Good luck to them in Florida. If they didn't want to play in Toronto that badly, then let them go ahead and move on- we'll find some other players.

I wouldn't say Florida "overpaid" at all. They're getting two quality players- probably both capable of playing top six roles. But I said the other day that I wouldn't be surprised if Roberts was demanding two years and that seems to be the case. Those contracts wouldn't have been the best for the Leafs to take on right now.

get over it people, there are many, many, many other better UFA's out there.

and with this move, JFJ has shown that he sees that.

besides, what we lost in roberts, we got back on draft day, and for 750K (per year) less. i have no doubt that o'neill will more than replace gary.

Excellent signings by Florida, exactly the type of players needed to mentor their young prospects. Its a shame to see them go, and I'm starting to worry a bit at this point, but none-the -less an excelent move by Keenan.

Disaster.

I'm willing to give JFJ time to put together a competitive roster, but This is a huge hole for the leafs.

Despite their respective ages, they were top performers for the Leafs the last few years, and hard competitors. Very hard competitors.

The Leafs haven't had a bonafide 2nd line centre since Doug Gilmour was here (the first time).

Roberts showed he can still carry a team, when Sundin got injured in the '02 playoffs.

They will not be easy to replace - I can't think of many UFAs that have Gary's combination of physical play and enough offensive ability to play on the first line.

The Biggest problem with Neuwe is his knee, and he's had a year off for that. Skills wise he can still bring it.

You don't think florida is going to compete ? They will with these guys, unlike the Leafs.

You think that there are plenty of UFAs who as good as these two ? then name the players ... are they better
AT THE SAME COST ? then Florida ( or Toronto ) should have signed them !

I can't blame them for taking the offers at all ... JFJ was offering 1.5M (rumoured) and fla is paying 2.25M ... I know which way I'd be going !

The Leafs do need to get younger, but not at the expense of better. Joe and Gary are not the vets that we need to replace

Good for them. I thank god they didn't end up in Ottawa or on one of our rivals. Florida not bad for an elder player. lol. Lotsa sunshine and golfing in april.

It's also ideal for us. I really like the direction JFJ is heading. I'm also glad he's not showinig blind loyalty but thinking rationaly.

Anyways, thanks Roberts & Nieuwendyk for all the years and hard work and good luck!
I hope they get a nice cheer when FLA comes to the ACC.

With Roberts and Nieuwendyk, a healthy Horton, and Luongo, I'm not so sure that the Panthers will be playing golf come April this year.....
