The more I look at it, it looks like Sundin and Belfour were kept for credibility. But JFJ seems to have a long term plan that involves younger players. Finally the Leafs might try and build this team properly.
With the dropping of Nolan, Mogilny, Roberts, Domi, Nieuwendyk and Leetch could the days of Depends jokes finally be over?
Yeah, but usher in the jokes about crappy teams stepping all over us. Unless JFJ pulls a rabbit out of his ass, this roster is going to be considerably weaker than what we iced 2 seasons ago, and if Eddy isn't up to par-- watch out. Not necessarily a bad thing, as I'm actually pretty happy with the idea of a full rebuild anyway.
Lindros, Allison and Carter can all be had for lower prices due to injury and recent poor performances in the case of Carter. All three are Toronto and area natives and would likely benefit from such. Rathje is an excellent stay at home guy while Gelinas will help replace some of the leadership lost through Nieuwendyk and Roberts, and is still a serviceable winger.
Edit: I refuse to touch Murray. He was a leach off of Thornton. The guy has a shot but thats it.

the only reason i'd hate to see a full-blown rebuild now is that i want to see sundin win a cup, but not with another team and not as a 40 year-old role-player with the leafs.
but once that fantasy subsides, i'm okay with a youth movement. =)
If anything, at 40 Sundin should hopefully be an Yzerman-like captain. But still, I'm not sure if we can rebuild fast enough for a cup win during Sundin's tenure. If by the time he's 39/40 he has yet to have won a cup, I'm sure I'd be one of many who'd be willing to trade him per his request to allow him to win one.
