I have to say this has been a disappointing "free agent frenzy" so far.

Pierre Lebrun made a good point on The Score. He noted that free agency used to start at midnight, this year it started at noon. Normally there would have been more deals than we've seen so far. I have a feeling that tomorrow will be a lot busier. Hopefully tonight. Back to work tomorrow.

Congrats to Downey; he's a hard-nosed kid. Nobody's worked harder to make the NHL and stay.

The Blues fans should like Downey. He's a hard-working enforcer/goon who, although possessing no other discernable NHL-level hockey skill, is a wonderful person.

Now thats true. Its only his total lack of any shred of talent that keeps him from being a good player

i think it's a case that both GMs and Players are scared what is a person worth, nobody wants to overpay or get underpaid. Once a few bigger free agents sign i think you'll see alot of the top ones going. My guess is the big flurry will be wednesday/thursdayish.

Downey replaces Danton on our 4th line. We had to replace him somehow and Downey can fight(which makes Low expendable).

I was hoping Rangers to get him. Always liked him since he was with the Bruins. Goodluck to him. I just hope Sather does not resign Sandy "no fight" McCarthy.

I don't dislike Downey, but it's a little frustrating to hear all other teams talking about how they're gonna get the big-name guys, while we have 2/3 of our payroll locked up in a few players...

maybe 06-07...new owner, weight off the books, tkachuk goes down to below $4M, pretty good free agent group if i'm not mistakened...

Why? Seems like a weird move by the Blues. Don't they have enough money issues? Why deal with another player, even if he has a low salary.

Except for the fact that Danton actually had NHL calliber talent. If only he had the emotional security necessary...

1st token FA signing by Larry Pleau: Aaron Downey.

Prediction on the 2nd token FA signing by Larry Pleau: Dan Focht.

I honestly think Pleau should be fined for wasting paper on this.

Because regardless of the amount of salary tied up in a few players, a team still has to field 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and a goalie a game.

But is Downey a guy who's got a chance in you-know-what of ever playing for the Blues in a playoff game? If not, then he fills the same exact role Reed Low does - he takes up a roster spot that someone else could fill and be productive in.

Answer this question:

Would you rather have a hard working guy(even if he does have limited ability) like Downey on the fourth line or Reed Low?

The 4th line was pretty set to begin with(Rycroft and RJ) but we needed a energy type guy to finish the line. Downey fits that bill. Personally I was hoping Blake Evans would get a chance but Downey works just as well.

I still expect 2 or 3 more signings from Pleau(one of them being a Ruchinsky/McEachern type) but I guess it is easier to get your fourth line set first.

Not a talented guy, but I think Blues fans will like Downey. I don't really care for enorcers, but I thought Downey was cool because he was so damn fearless and full of energy.
