I thought Poni was offered $450k or soemthing and it is expected that he will take it. So that should take care of the 3rd or fourth line winger position.
If Antropov does not accept the offer and stay in Russia it is no big loss in my opinion because $1.1 million is slightly overpaying for him anyway -- I would figure $800-$850k.
By the way, why did Poni only play 19 games last year in Russia?
Damien Cox was on TSN, and suggested the Leafs only have about 10 million left to spend, that they won't go anywhere near the cap of 39 million. Is this the escro account stuff taking effect?
I don't like both Perrott AND Belak on the ice in the same game let alone the same line unless it was caused by injury, but I think both of them are of the age and experience that they are entering their prime. I think they will be better than 2 years ago. At least Perrott can skate, and Belak for all his faults can beat the crap out of all but a few guys in the league.

Ya, Belaks had some good tussels, he stands his own against gorgeous george, but still, would like to see a better option I think, don't know what though.
If Poni accepts, then I would say that he takes over the 3rd line spot. Given the money involved though, the leafs might bring up Steen to play 3rd line C and move Antro to 2nd line, which is risky but maybe necessary. in which case, only have about 8 million for 2 top 6's.
which really doesn't bother me in the least, I would love to see us draft in the top five next draft. Losing would suck though, I would rather us win, and still get a top five pick, maybe some trades or something.

Here is the actual break down of what we have already spent and what we have left.
Mats Sundin................6.3
Ed Blefour..................5.4
Bryan McCabe.............3.5
Tomas Kaberle............2.3
Ken Klee....................1.9
Darcy Tucker..............1.6
Jeff O'Neill..................1.5
Nik Antropov...............1.1
Aki Berg......................1.1
Matt Stajan .................0.806
Wade Belak.................0.798
Chad Kilger..................0.475
Karel Pilar....................0.475
Alexi Ponikarovski...........0.45
Nathan Perrot...............0.45
Mikael Tellqvist .............0.45
Total so far is 28.683 Million
Cap Room 10.317 Million With 7 Players to fill out Roster
Here is what I think JFJ's plan is
1 Defencemen somewhere between 3 and 4
1 Winger between 2 and 3
1 Center at 1.5
This would leave us with about 1.8 to 2.5 Million to spend on 4 players at arround the league minimum to fill the 23 man roster
Kyle Wellwood
Alex Steen
Carlo Colaiacovo
Clark Wilm
Honestly that's such a stupid move. Why give Berg a QO of 1.1mill?
For a guy that's that big, he sure is a real ***** when he steps on the ice. If he started being more physical and had better and smarter puck movement, the move would've made sense...
It's going to be a tight, tight squeeze. The players that JFJ decides to pick up this week, and next week, will make or break us next season.
Personally I'd be surprised if Wellwood isn't in the lineup opening night, he's clearly proven he's more then capable of being one of the best in the AHL.
I don't know how well he will cope in the NHL, but given we know he's well capable of leading an AHL team he has to be given a chance to see if he can handle the NHL... why not know?
We'll need some cheap contracts to fit under the cap anyways, and Wellwood would clearly be cheap with definite potential upside.
oh please, because we lose Roberts/Newy/Leetch, all of a sudden we don't make the playoffs? Nobody knows anything in this new NHL season. Who wouldve predicted Richards and Stlouis went nuts like they did.

Mogilny, Nolan, Roberts, Nieuwendyk, and Leetch all gone.
O'Neill added on.
I don't think there's much doubt we're considerably weaker then we were last season. I do however agree, I think the Leafs will make the playoffs.
Whether that's in the 7th or 8th spot, or our more typical 4th to 6th spot remains to be seen depending on who is signed.
Hmm... a wild thought, I wonder if Yushkevich would be interested in returning?
Probably not given he's making good money in Europe, and is seemingly quite content to remain there.
