Would have gotten that or more on the open market. Fair deal.

Phaneuf is really coming into his own this season. More than ever, I trust him more than any other Leaf dman, and he has done a great job shutting people down repeatedly. The problem in Toronto is not Phaneuf, its that he can only play 24 minutes a night and not 60.

A lot of people dislike Toronto and see the Phaneuf of 4 years ago. Phaneuf has been superb this season and is only 28. Defenseman usually peak the older they are.

Dion seemed to have peaked when he entered the league, now he's just playing the same as before without the powerplay production.

Good contract. Will look like a steal once the cap rises.

You have to forgive hab fans, they don't expect players of Dion's size on their team so they would be traded for the likes of DD or Briere, lol. Good signing by the Leafs, no choice really and he is a first pairing DMan and worth the payday. Cap going up they won't even notice this.

Fair deal for the player.

With the rising cap this will be a bit of a steal in a couple years.

Term only takes him to 35, which is fine by me.

Good signing for both sides. I have not been a Phaneuf supporter, but he has played better this year by a fairly significant margin. I think Carlyle has been good for him. The Leafs needed to do this, and they did not break the bank (the salary cap is going up, people, get the hell used to it so we don;t see the whining in every thread).

good price considering the market. i don't like the term, but he would have been offered the same if he made himself available as a free agent.

I don't really like Phaneuf but he definitely signed for less than he could have if he hit UFA. Leafs had no one to replace him with either.

The Leafs will sink or swim with the core of Phil, Dion, Lupul and Clarkson.

If they don't start looking like a contender in 2-3 years, the next 4 years are going to be long and painful.

Fair deal, as long as his play doesn't decline.

Fair market value.

Don't understand people saying it will be a steal when the cap goes up though. As the cap goes up his play will decline because he'll be getting older.

Mountain of jelly on the first page. Would go good with some peanut butter.

Fantastic signing.

Great deal for us. He's been great for the past 2 seasons.

I would have preferred a 5 year deal but I guess for the cap hit 7 years is fair.

He would have for sure but as a Leafs fan I don't like the deal. Should have traded him at the deadline or let him walk at seasons end.

Another bad contract. Sure the caps going up but were spending all that extra cap space on Phaneuf and Clarkson.

I agree.

This contract is not a steal or amazing, it's a fair deal.

Kessel's contract is the bad one.

You say that, but who care's that the leafs are spending all their cap space? Is there some superstar UFA on the market that the seven million dollars would be better used on, who would be an improvement on Phaneuf? I don't think so. He's barely got a raise on the contract he already had, and he's the captain. He could have asked for 8 years, settled for 7. Sounds to me like a great deal for the Leafs. Remember, cap space is only wasted if there's something better available to use it on. If there isn't, the space isn't wasted. You aren't going to see a player of Dion's caliber hitting the market for any less than that, so it's a good deal for the Leafs.
