Don't think it's an overpayment, I think it's a pretty fair deal in terms of money, but the length is a bit long.

I'm a Habs fan, so obviously I strongly dislike Phaneuf and the Leafs, but it's clear that he's dedicated to his team and to his fans. The team doesn't have a "winning history" and it looks like it's hitting a few bumps right now. A player like him would thrive on a team like Chicago or St-Louis because he wouldn't be forced to take all defensive duties, but he's sticking to his team, which is commendable.

This is a good deal, people bashing this deal, should know that the cap will be $90 Million in 2-3 years(imagine what kind of cap hits will come out when that happens).

nothing wrong with this contract. fair and square and he would have probably gotten 0.5-1M more on the open market. pretty much the best meaningful contract the Leafs have signed lately.

I'm just happy because this means Holmgren won't be going after him

Good on Phaneuf on getting the money. I cant hate someone who is actually able to get more money to do his job. Hes set for retirement.

I have to admit it still boggles my mind when someone (not named Crosby, Ovechkin, etc) makes more money than anyone on my Canucks.

Edit. forgot sedins are making 7mil on their new contract.

It will be $80m at that point. The deal is pretty fair value, he could have got more in UFA.

Phaneuf extension includes modified no-trade clause beginning in year 1 of extension. He has no protection until extension kicks in...
Strange. No idea why he wouldn't insist on his NTC starting immediately.

Good deal; D-men have a later prime than forwards and it has shown this year. Really maturing as a defensively responsible player. Glad to have him back for 7 more years!!!

I'll just entertain your idea that this is awful and ask who would be a "real" #1D that will hit FA and will want to come to Toronto or be traded to Toronto?

Sometimes I wonder if people understand that there is more factors in obtaining a player than saying "yes, I want you". This isn't NHL 14.

He can't do that because it would mean modifying his old contract.

Fair deal for both sides, Phaneuf gets a slight raise on his current deal (0.5 million), and the Leafs get a slight discount on his real UFA market value (by about 0.5 million).

Well, the extension begins in the 14-15 season... (July 1st?), so until June 30, 2014, it would still be his previous contract, correct? Not sure if you can amend stipulations (NTC, NMC) on previous contracts.

Anyone calling this a bad deal isn't looking at the whole picture. Dion @6.5 is fair value, a 500k increase isn't a problem, especially considering that with inflation and the rising cap, this is actually a pay-cut (obviously not literally, but in terms of inflation compared to his last contract and percentage of the cap, he's making less than when he signed his last deal). The only "overpayment" is that he got 1, maybe 2, extra years on the contract, but even then, when the cap is at $85M+, who knows what a 33-year-old Phaneuf might be able to ask for.

A lot of people were hoping that he'd take a discount to stay, and while this isn't a discount, it's also no more than market-value. He got what he would have gotten anywhere else, comparing him to contracts signed under the old cap like Suter, Weber and Keith with their back-diving deals isn't fair, nor is comparing him to guys who signed as RFAs like Karlsson, Pietro, Doughty, OEL, etc.

Pretty much, fair contract for a player who is irreplaceable and is severely underrated after being overrated for quite some time. Hopefully Gardiner/Rielly become capable 2/3 D-men in the near-future to help take some pressure off Dion and help spread the load.

I'll take me a Pietrangelo and a Suter please.

How many business days does it take to ship them to Toronto?

Do I have to pay a shipping fee?

Under 10% of the cap for their #1D, any team would take that deal for their #1

Maybe a little overpaid, but it's a deal the Leafs couldn't afford not to make.
