Why is cannabis usage and not alcohol consumption frowned down upon?

I'm a pot head and I'm doing pretty well for myself... Have a family and home .
Buddy of mine smokes even more then I and he makes bass guitars for a living and owns a home.

Benjamin Franklin? Ernest Hemingway? Vincent Van Gogh? Winston Churchill? Those are just a few that come to mind.

There's more than a few over the years that were raging alcoholics.

Just like there are more than a few that frequently smoked a bit of grass.

If we're going to start comparing drugs by tallying up the number of great people who were addicted to them, alcohol will place really highly.

But, especially in recent decades, marijuana and probably a psychedelic like LSD would do pretty well themselves.

LSD = the guy who broke the DNA code or something like that. I forget which.

Kary Mullis.

Was a LSD user amongst other things.

Developed Polmerase Chain Reaction which allows replication of DNA for diagnostic use among other things. Completely revilutionized medicine and forensics.

He was high on LSD when he came up with the solution to replicatinf DNA or so the story goes.

Pot is illegal, alcohol isn't. Also, pot is seen as a cheap, easy drug that teens and people who can't afford anything better do. Alcohol can be fancy, and there's plenty of drinks that commonfolk can't afford. Drinking PBR as a 45 year old is frowned upon. Sipping aged whiskey isn't. Pot is pot, there isn't a difference between ****** M-16 outdoor grown weed and the fine, potent stuff. At least in the public's eye.

Notice I said alcoholics, not your average drinking man.

If you take one hit of pot it doesn't make you a pothead any more than having one beer makes you a raging alcoholic.

Thanks. Saw him confirm the story on 60 Minutes I think.

The discrepancy is even bigger in Finland speaking strictly on societal grounds..

It is completely acceptable, often even encouraged, for people to binge drink in Finland (and I'm not just talking about high school/college kids) but god forbid it becomes public knowledge you smoke reefer and oh the looks people (especially older people) will give you

On that note, just as in the US, there is a shift in this way of thinking underway.. the only difference being it is slower and is a bigger shift

Both pot and alcohol consumption are personal choices. I do not use marijuana but I would not judge another who does. Moreover, I would not associate myself with someone that judged another by what they put into their own bodies.

I'm not a particular fan of either, from a health perspective. I drink occasionally and in moderation. Will probably never try marijuana.

I think it is pretty hard to say pot should be illegal when cigarettes are still legal.

Most of them probably met the business end of a coat hanger before they could do any real damage to humanity. The one who survived is just an internet troll.

What if getting high doesn't make you a moron? What if just a quick hit of some killer pot actually made you more creative and perceptive?

What if the underlying supposition of the mainstream liberals and conservatives on this thread -- that weed turns you into a moron, or the "Spicoli Effect" -- is itself the locus of stupidity, and the ideological nexus that chains the mainstream to a socially repressive drug policy?

It hasn't become an established tradition, whereas drinking alcohol...

Similar idea as in Mexico where a lot of people look down on hamburgers as bad junk food, but tacos are great.
