I like Gleason, but his best days are well behind him. I like this trade me thinks.

I don't even think Gleason's as bad THIS YEAR as people are making him out to be. Fact of the matter is he's just redundant with what we have in the org right now, and Liles fills a need and is a great mentor for sMurphy. I still think Gleason can be a good #4/5 type guy, just needed a change of scenery and he got it. Likewise I still think Liles can be a good #5/PP specialist type guy, just needed a change of scenery, and he got it.

Really don't see what's not to like about this deal, but guys are great locker room presences.

Deal is done, or should I say official.

Can't say that I feel that either side should feel left out by this trade. It's basically an old-fashioned hockey trade: two guys with nearly identical contracts get the change-of-scenery that both of them probably could use. A win-win for both of the players and the team over the long run, plus Carolina get a sixth-round prospect flyer to even out the fact that Liles was (at the time) buried in the minors this year.

could have at least let the guy have his last game as a leaf as the classic.

**** move by both teams finalizing it as hes warming up IMO

And if he hurts himself the deal is off. He may not have even dressed if the trade hadn't gone down yet. He's only played 6 games this season.

Everyone is acting like he was blindsided by the trade and pulled from the game. He was never playing in this game in the first place, and I have to imagine he had some idea that this was happening. My impression is the team let him go out there for warmups instead of just holding him out.

Wasn't he going to be a scratch today anyhow?

I'm hoping Liles brings a little of what Bergeron brought last year.

I read several Leafs fans saying that Liles was probably going to be a scratch today, even if he wasn't traded.

With Pitkanen healthy there was no cap space for Hainsey. In fact Hainsey was signed immediately after it was announced that Pitkanen was done for the season, allowing his cap dollars to be used on signing Hainsey.

Pitkanen healthy would have equalled no Hainsey...

Nonis said that Liles wanted to be traded today and was well aware what was happening with Carolina.

Maybe the two teams/GMs aren't the devil afterall.

Liles becomes maybe our best all around skating d now, he's smoother laterally than murph though he isn't as explosive straight ahead. He skates with the puck well, and is a solid passer. Always played defense more by stick check than physicality for obvious reasons. He doesn't have a bomb but he can shoot well enough to play on the pp and could end up being the qb. When he first started he qb'd Sakic and forsberg, don't know what he has left that way now.

He could end up being a top 4 guy for us pretty easily. It doesn't help out down low but it helps speed up the transitions out of the zone which can be just as important. He's a good complimentary player over being a leader, making him pretty similar to Faulk, Sekera and Hainsey to some extent.

He's also a great guy. I used to teach a inline youth clinic in Denver, and through the avs jml came out and hung out with us one afternoon. He was great with the kids, and we sat and talked for a while. I've got a picture of us on the rink. I know it's their job to be cordial but it felt sincere with him. I'm glad he's here though I wish it was at the beginning of this deal as we don't really know for sure where he's at right now.

Could be nothing different, could make us better. I don't think it'll hurt us.

From

Pitkanen-McBain
Gleason-Faulk
Harrison-Corvo
Bergeron, Sanguinetti

To

Sekera-Faulk
Hainsey-Bellemore
Liles-Murphy
Harrison, Komisarek

Good job JR! Our defense is finally starting to take shape now. I don't actually think JML will be paired with sMurphy, especially while we're trying to ease him into the lineup, but his speed and skill will be perfect for both of them on the powerplay. I'm actually looking foward to not getting beat on counterattacks all the time now, especially on the powerplay.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Jack Johnson yet in this thread since Gleason&Belanger came to the Canes for J.Johnson & Tverdovsky.

J.Johnson hasn't been a total bust but he has never lived up to his hype. Johnson for Liles...meh, could be worse

What's not to like?

Gleason wasn't helping from the press box. The PP stinks. JML should help with the PP since it can't get worse. It's a minor cap improvement, but a real $1M decrease in actual dollars over the next 2 years. Canes also get the rights to a decent prospect.

2 players that will probably benefit from a change of scenery.

There was absolutely no chance that Liles was going to play today. Our team has finally got its act together and was on its first two game win streak in ages, Randy wasnt going to change the lineup.

JML should be able to jump right into your lineup with no issue. Our AHL coach said he was by far the best dman on the Marlies, and hes looked fine in his few games with the Leafs. Ive got no doubt whatsoever he can still be a 4-5 guy. Hes a class act in all facets of the game too, on and off the ice.

This is spot on, this trade is all about change for 2 players that will hopefully will benefit from a change of scenery.

From a Leafs perspective, we had too many PMD, with Gardiner and Rielly especially, Liles was squeezed out. I think Canes fans will be surprised by him, he was playing well for the Marlies, certainly hasn't lost a step, however, he did after his concussion. Which he seems to be over with now.

Gleason reminds me of another former Cane. Dennis Seidenburg, they were once teammates. If Gleason can get healthy, I think he can be a top 4 guy again. One thing I do like about him, he won the Steve Chaisson award twice for the Canes.

Character guy in Liles for a Character guy in Gleason. Hoping it works out for both teams.
