As for Mike Smith, I can't believe he can make an olympic team with his play. Wouldn't have picked him for team Germany if I could have. Makes sense he's on the team though because there's only about 8 of us Canadians who actually watch Coyotes hockey and realize he isn't in 2010 form.

My least favorite about this is that Smith will sit as the third goalie. He'll never play an Olympic game, but he will think that everything he's done has been good and that he's God's gift to the Coyotes. I don't think this sends a message to him that he needs to be better in any way.
Greiss is starting tonight and hear is hoping for the first shut out of the season. If he plays well, maybe Tip will go with Greiss for the next 5 or 6 games. That is the best way to send the message.

If you watched any of the World Jrs the best goalies in the tournament all play in the CHL. We are now furthering the development of European goalies. That is about to change as the CHL will no longer be allowed to bring over European goalies. On NA goalies will be used. I think this might help for the future???

This is so backwards I just don't know what to say. While I like it that Smith made the team and hope it improves his confidence I would not say his performance this year merits it. Has Canada fallen so far in producing quality goaltenders? Where are the Quebecois?

Absurd that Smith made TC. Now he's going to be even more full of himself and instead of a kick in the ass to get his game going, he got a pat on the back.

Gotta love team Russia for their horrible selection process. Almost as bad as team USA.

Some of you guys put such a crazy amount of **** on Smith that I think is a bit undeserving. You make him out to be a bad human being with the "more full of himself" nonsense. The guy has done the right things in the community. Hes said things that our coaches say about our D. There isn't massive blaming like I've seen in other markets. Its a frustrated under-performing hockey player. Jesus, this is what goalies do.

None of this makes him an a-hole. I'm glad the guy gets to make his national team. And I hope to beat him. Then I hope he comes back and actually makes saves.

EDIT: Also 2010 form? He was excellent as recent as 2012.

Selanne going to his 6th Olympics.

Just for this I'm rooting for Finland to medal. Long shot, I know.

Apparently Vrby and the Czech coach don't get along. Vrby said himself that either way he's happy because he gets to rest. I'm cool with that.

I hope Smith gets played against USA so we can light him up. I know he won't but still.

Still pissed Yandle didn't make USA.

Sweden looks very good.

Slovakia is my dark house for this tournament.

If by 2012, you mean last season, then you must have extremely low standards. Also, I've always viewed Smith as somewhat of a ******, but I really don't care as long as he plays well.

Sweden = GOLD
Finland = SILVER
Russia = BRONZE

I know, very similar to the WJC...but's how I see it. NA teams don't play well on that side of the pond.

I dare say he was referring to the first half of 2012, when Smith put up good numbers and stole some games for us as we made it to the conference finals.

I doubt such a special would do well up in Canada considering the anger is high and all over up north with news of Smith being on the roster. Just for that, now I want to see Mike Smith get the gold as a passenger, unless if Yandle gets on Team USA of course.

The US and the Canadians both seem like they're terrified of losing, as opposed to hell-bent on winning. The Canadians have super high expectations, and the US has the big teevee audience, if nothing else. I've read a few bits about why Yandle was left off the roster--Scott Burnside, some others--and they reek of timidity, fearfulness, reactionary thinking; in a word, cowardice. Brian Burke's apparent rationale for excluding Yandle, and pushing Jack Johnson all the while, is the very model of hypocrisy and self-deception. Consequently, I hope he stubs his toe something fierce.

Oh for Pete's sake, I'd rather starve.

I want to say that I love Canada, in the end. They are my kind of people; I apologize for almost everything. No lie. But Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick, they do need guidance in the matter of processed porcine meat products.

Anyone else feel like Russia's roster as a whole really isn't that great? I have no gripe against Russians, Pavel Bure and Malkin are two of my favorite players of all time. But that roster just leaves me wanting.

I'd say TC looks best and Sweden/USA are 2a 2b.

Russia's top couple lines will be tough to contain, but the rest of the roster is mediocre. Still, if they can get sound goaltending from Bobrovsky (or Varlamov or whoever the starter is), they should be okay.

NHL Could Reevaluate Sending Players To Sochi For Olympics, Some Players Elect To Leave Families Home
Quote:
The father of St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie put it this way:

“It’s getting to the point where our lives are on the line if we go there,” Tim Oshie told the New York Times. “They’re talking about terrorizing families. I’d rather stay in the homeland.”

I hope this is the last year of the NHL at the Olympics. It's much less beneficial to the league and its owners when the games aren't held in North America. Let's be honest, the league has the upper hand here (sending NHLers to the Olympics = many more hockey viewers), so if it's not on their terms, then forget it.

If there is still a desire to compete nation vs. nation, hold a World Cup of Hockey in the summer, or as Bettman once suggested, have hockey at the Summer Olympics. It sounds funny, but you'd get better players involved, as well as more viewers (something for hockey fans in the dog days of summer). All you need is an arena.
