Im liking the Kings approach of signing guys who were amongst the best in the AHL last season. At the very least they'll be good for Manchester.

LaBarberra was the Top Goalie in the AHL in 2003 and was the AHL MVP.

I"m betting he's Garon's backup in LA this year. It's risky for the Kings...but who knows. We'll see.

Didn't he have like six shutouts in a row in the AHL in 03-04, or only allowed 2 goals in eight games or some crazy streak like that? I remember there was a piece on him in a THN issue from like Feb. '04 or something.

hmm, odd. the rangers talked a lot about how they wanted him back and were planning on using him as the backup for weekes this season. i wonder if maybe he wanted out of the rangers org. and to a team where he didn't have to worry about lundqvist and montoya breathing down his neck

kinda bites for rangers fans...i'd like to hear the story about it. if the rangers just let him go or if he walked on his own

I dont know, if there is a strike agaisnt Garon it is his inexperience in the NHL, and now they grab a guy with even less to back him up. I, and many other assumed the Kings would have gotten a veteran to calm the young guy down, like a Burke, Dunham or Dafoe.

and keep in mind that labarbera would have to go through waivers to play in the AHL again...so he's pretty much a lock to at least start at the backup position unless they just drop him again

many ranger fans never saw much of a future for Labs beyond a backup role. Right behind him is Lundqvist, Montoya, and Holt (who could pan out to be a good backup at some point as well), and in front of him was Weekes, so there really was no place for him.

LaBarbera got a two year deal and the Rangers have Al Montoya and Henrik Lundqvist while the Kings goaltending is rather thin

Looks like he'll back up Garon in LA -

"'In Jason we have added another promising young goaltender who we expect to play a key role with the Kings this season,'" said Taylor."

I think that was Valiquette.

Yeah. And they both will fall.

I like this signing, only because I'm not a Kings fan.

This coming from a guy whose team just re-signed Garth Snow.

Go away, troll.

Thats a pretty bold statement.

One of them could end up being the next Kiprusoff for all we know, they certainly have the potential.

Now I like the Islanders, I really do, but I'd be very pissed if my team signed a 36 year old to back up my goaltender when much younger options were available.

Labarbera is a fantastic AHL goalie.

Unfortunatly his game doesn't translate well to the NHL.

When put in the net on NHL ice his subpar(for NHL goalie) reflexes really start to show.

Hartford had a monster of a team system that can inflate any goalie's numbers (see Valiquette).

I wish Jason well, but don't come in thinking he'll challenge for a #1 goalie spot. He's a third string NHL goalie. With his peak being a season or 2 of backup duties on an NHL club.

Huh? When did the Canucks sign Snow?

My username is VanIslander, as in Vancouver Island-er.

I am no troll. I think it's a bad move to have garon and lala together. Sure, one could be the next Kipper (ummphh) but more likely they will flounder together.

It wasn't the greatest goaltending decision. That's why this non-Kings fan likes it.
