Weekes & Labarbera

I apologize if this is covered somewhere else. I tried to post this info Monday around noon, but until now, I have simply not been able to get into HF (I suppose due to traffic). Mod, feel free to zap this if it's redundant.

Did anyone notice that according to the list provided by nhl.com:

1) Jason Labarbera is UFA

2) Kevin Weekes can opt to become UFA if he dares.

I knew LaBarbera was UFA, but didn't realize that Weekes qualifed too. I really don't think Weekes will take the option--he has a solid chance to start the majority of games for the Rangers and could improve his marketablity with a "good" (ie solid) season.

I have no idea if LaBarbera will be willing to be re-signed, in spite of all the quotes from Ranger management practically giving him a spot on the Rangers roster. I guess it depends on whether he buys into the belief that the Rangers are really serious about his potential as a NHLer.

If the Rangers were smart they would dump LaBarbera. He will never be an NHL goalie.

That's harsh to say about LaBarbera. He should at least backup until Holmqvist is ready to make the jump into the NHL, which might be midway through the season.

I don't know. I don't have much faith in Jason either. Fine for the AHL.
If not Weekes we can find someone else relatively cheap that can hold the fort until Lundquist or Montoya are ready. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on someone to stand in the way of two of our top 3 or 4 prospects.

I wish the Rangers were smart enough to get some compensation for him, either by signing then trading or if he was a RFA. Either way I don't think he'll be a #1 G in this league.

I envision Lundqvist being a backup in the NHL and Montoya getting the majority of the starts in Hartford.
