Kings sign Jason LaBarbera

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with unrestricted free agent goaltender Jason LaBarbera, Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

LaBarbera, 25, played in 53 games this past season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Rangers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. With the Wolf Pack, the 6-3, 224-pound native of Prince George, British Columbia, had a 31-16-2 record, six shutouts, a 1.84 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .934 save percentage. LaBarbera’s GAA ranked second amongst all AHL netminders, his save-percentage ranked third, his win total was seventh and his shutouts were tied for eighth best.

“We like Jason’s game quite a bit and look forward to him playing an integral role with the Kings this year,” said Taylor. “Having added another promising goaltender in Mathieu Garon last summer, and watching him play and continue to develop with our AHL club this past season in Manchester, we like the fact that we have a couple of solid, young goaltenders who should continue to grow and prosper with the Kings.”

LaBarbera has also played in five career NHL games, all with the Rangers. During the 2003-04 season he posted a 1-2-0 record and a 4.85 GAA in four games. He also had an assist. In 2000-01, he made his NHL debut and played in one game on October 14, 2000, at Pittsburgh.

Originally selected by the Rangers in the third-round (66th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, LaBarbera in 2003-04 with Hartford played in 59 games had a 34-9-9 record, a 1.59 GAA (second best in the AHL) and a .936 save-percentage (tied for third best). His 34 wins and 13 shutouts led the AHL. In 1997-98 helped the Portland Winterhawks (Western Hockey League) capture the Memorial Cup with an 18-4-0 record and a 3.31 GAA average in 23 contests.

Meh. That's only 48 games of total NHL experience between Garon and LaBarbera.

Great signing! I've watched him several times and think he's ready to back up Garon. I am a happy guy. I'm sure he was cheap too.

Seems like the late bloomer type. I guess the Kings will be trying ot push Garon to keep the starters role as opposed to comforting him with a vet. presence.

I think he could easily push Garon for the #1.

Was hoping for a bit more experience than that. If they were going to go with someone that has little to no NHL experience, might as well go with Hauser.

Way better? That's a bit of an overstatement.

Jason LaBarbera: SV% .934 GAA: 1.84
Adam Hauser: SV% .933 GAA 1.93

You want to know who he's "way better" than?

Mathieu Garon: SV% .927 GAA: 2.12

Maybe LaBarbera and Hauser should be competing for the #1 spot!
How's that for an overstatement?

I can see Reggie's point. I would always cringe when Hartford came to town and he was in net. Good pick up IMO.

Could this be a little bit of a controversy? Plan B so to speak....
