Short answer: who cares?

Long answer: In the short term, Stralman. Allen or McIlrath can be called up to fill a spot. Anaheim would have to send some salary back, so maybe they throw in Sbisa or Souray. We could trade other assets for a dman.

None of those options are going to be as good as Girardi this year, but we need to take the long term view here.

yeah, then Allen comes up and takes the third spot...

Opposing wingers will have a ball of a time scoring on us with that right hand D "depth"

If they move Callahan and Girardi, which IMO they should do, struggling for the rest of this year wouldn't be that big of a deal because of the pick they would be receiving in this years draft. Find a replacement in the off-season or bring in someone in a trade for MDZ.

I think Anaheim would pass. Silfverberg was the main piece in the Ryan trade, and he's their long-term replacement for Selanne.

Agreed, think lower end as far as young players. Friberg? Kerdiles? Noesen (Hurt)? Rakell? Theodore?

I highly doubt they move Etem although he is exactly who the Rangers should focus on. Big, skates like the wind, hits. He is Kreider and I don't say that lightly.

Rakell and Noesen are names that jump out at me from that list. Both were with the Whalers while JT Miller was there, so they've probably been on the Rangers' radar for a while.

I could see the Rangers targeting a package of Vatenen and one of Noesen or Rakell in exchange for Girardi at a reduced salary.

losing cally and/or girardi would hurt in the short term..but how much.

teams been playing pretty much exactly the same with or without cally.

Girardis loss would be tougher to gauge, but either way, it wouldnt make much of a difference...do they go from being a below average team to being a terrible team just by losing him? Doubtful.

Stralman - McD
MDZ - Staal (i still dont get why the 2 of them havent been paired together more often...staal would make up for so many of his mistakes)
Moore - Allen/Falk

It's not really a HUGE monumental step down...

I think that's a coup. Noesen is hurt this year (I think a year long injury?). Hard nosed, projects more as a 3rd/2nd line tweener. Similar player to Miller. I like him.

That's the thing. You can trade Girardi and still ice a decent defensive group. Hang onto Del Zotto until the draft if they're that worried about it. Maybe he figures his game out or at least raises his trade value.

Who's playing the let side on that Staal - DZ pairing? I think one of the biggest issues with Del Zotto is that he's been playing the right side most of the year as opposed to the left side. He looks much better at LD.

Yeah he lost the whole year with a knee injury that he had to have surgery on. He's one of those guys that could really take off if he found chemistry with a couple of skilled offensive players. Busts his ass every shift, has decent hands and size, and has those intangibles coaches really like. I'd be worried about his skating taking a step back after the knee injury as well. Did a lot to improve it, but a season ending injury could sent him back.

Nice is not the word I would use.

Stralman - see last night. Let's give him even more minutes. He is good for what he is, but I'd be wary about playing him 22+ min a night. Every night.

Del Zotto has been terrible on the right side. At times he has been passable on the left. Now locked into top-4 minutes.

Moore + a rookie is not instilling much confidence. Though I like Allen.

Not even getting into what happens if McD, Staal, or Stralman get hurt. I can handle the "maximize the return on assets" argument. But the defense without Girardi takes a massive step back, in my opinion.

Girardi would be a great addition but personally really hope those pieces aren't included. (Silfver+ Palms+ or Etem+)

Add in a prospect and it's basically what we got for Ryan who had two years left.

Also would require a d-man going your way, log jam for us.
