Ottawa drafting mistakes

What drafting mistakes did we as an organization make over the past few years? by mistake I mean drafting a player when we had the ability to draft a better player, ex drafting Lee when we could've drafted Kopitar. Are there any other examples?

Daigle instead of Pronger and Kariya.

Edit: Nevermind, you wanted over the past few years not all time.

Daigle and Lee are the big ones.

Wasting two picks on Chouinard is another

I think the Norqiques offered players such as Forsberg , Nolan and Hextall for the rights to draft Daigle too

When I read your title I immediately thought of Lee. Since you already mentioned it, I will reinforce it with this:

Don't draft guys that look like ostriches.

Anyways, Ottawa's drafting history in the first round over say the last 10 years has been pretty good. And I think first/second rounders are what we should focus on here since it is hard to call 3rd/4th/5th round draft choices mistakes. It's such a crap shoot at that point, and sometimes a gem emerges. Revisionist history type thing. Ie. Weber taken 49th overall in '03. Who knew?

As a first rounder, Jim O'Brien hasn't worked out all that well for us, but he is still in the organization. Albeit banished from Ottawa.

we've drafted well. i'm surprised how successful our 1st rounders have been. even high picks like our #6 don't guarantee a good NHLer yet almost all our 1st rounders look to become NHLers.

karlsson, cowen, zibanejad, ceci, lazar, the dud would be Rundblad? (even though we didn't draft him and it's far too early in his career). jury's still out on Noesen, Puempel, Ceci and Lazar though

Huge hindsight. Only Lee really applies. Lee was more of a reach where he was selected.

The rest makes no sense. In fact, I'd argue Ottawa has been the best at drafting where they have recently compared to other options.

The fact we got a talent of Karlsson at 15 is amazing. Then there's Lehner/Silfverbergs/Wierciochs/Stones

Ottawa has done very well.

Subban was a 2nd rounder. It's not like he was really on anyone's radar.

I was so mad the night we took Z over Couturier. Like raging.

Forget eating crow. I'm having a whole raven for dinner.

What's JOB's situation? I seem to remember him playing pretty well with Spezza in the rangers series, I think he assisted Turris on the GWG in Game 4 of that series too. Has the organizaton just given up on him?

I think he's Fuhr's brother. Which would explain the irrational hate he has towards Murray

There was so much hype around Daigle. He was going #1 overall no matter who had the pick.

I'd say the answer is Brian Lee.

Everybody was like: "huh?" when Muckler picked him.

I was hoping for Marc Staal myself, which would have been an infinitely better selection, but obviously with hindsight, Kopitar would have been the homerun pick.

When we drafted Lee we had very good depth at centre. What we needed was a large puck moving defenceman. This is like reviewing past relationships. There will be winners, loses, keepers and the ones that got away. Even if the one at the time was a sure thing.

Remember the people that got mad when we picked Zib over Couts or Cowen over MPS?

i keep expecting a dud from Murray at drafts because it's hard to avoid the reality of probabilities, but the Murray's seem to laugh at probabilities.

The Murray team also has a balanced strategy, picking smallish dman, to picking an injured one, to picking safe players.

So all kinds of players, so long as they are not Russian.

I still remember watching Anze destroy the WJC and badly wanting him from that point onward. When we came up to the podium I couldn't believe our luck that he had fallen so far because people thought a guy from a small country just looked good in comparison to his team... despite the fact that he put his team on his back against far superior competition.

Easily the worst of all time. Muckler basically cost us a 2007 Stanley Cup with that choice. Maybe more. Brutal, brutal call that was made by him personally (or so it's been told) and was against the advice of his scouting staff. That's why Murray is a great drafter. Listens to the scouts. Anze would be on our team if Brian & Tim were in charge at that time.

Jakub Klepis. Didn't ever see anything special about him going back to the WHL. He got us one of my all time favourite Sens though.
