Ouch. I propose that the NHL award each team a point and then give the win to whichever fanbase beats the other in a best of 5 match consisting of:
  • Trivia Tournament
  • NHL 14 Tournament
  • Magic the Gathering/D&D Tournament
  • Pick-up hockey game
  • Drinking match

I feel confident in our chances.

That was my first thought as well. Hope everyone enjoyed their short vacation to Buffalo. Wonder when they will be able to fly back to Raleigh? Buffalo Niagara International is currently closed.

I doubt the NHL wouldn't look at it this way...but if the Canes are fighting for a playoff spot and Sabres have no chance, then make the Sabres be the one that plays 3 in 3 as it will have no material impact on their season.

looking at both schedules, literally the only date I see open is 2/25.

and the first niagara center is available that night.

If it's not that night, they will have to tack it on to the end of the season.

They'll probably move other games around to make it fit.

Last season the sabres/bruins had a game postponed due to the marathon bombing. They rescheduled the game for a day the sabres were meant to play the penguins, and moved the sabres/penguins game to another day later that week.

Couldn't they just play tomorrow? Buffalo and Carolina are both off, and I don't know of any events that the First Niagara Center would be holding.

Yeah, did the same thing and came up with the same result.

Since Buffalo's trying for a 1st overall anyway, can we make it so they have to do the 3 in 3?

Pretty sure the 25th is still the olympic break.

Beyond all the owners hating letting their players play in the Olympics, this is another argument for not allowing the NHL guys to play in the Olympics. When things like this happen, it's a nightmare.

Still part of the Olympic break

We'd then have a 3-in-3 situation.

That'd give the Hurricanes a 3 in 3.

Earliest possible date at the end of the season would be April 15. Didn't the playoffs last year start around then?

Olympics end on the 23rd. NHL resumes play on the 26th.

I'm just saying that would be a valid option. It's not like there is overlap.

Last game last year was April 29. But it was a lockout-season.

I don't want to come off as insensitive, but this is why it makes no sense to me to call the game off. I realize there's a safety issue for fans, and it's not really fair for them. But the Canes traveled to Buffalo. The officials traveled to Buffalo. The Sabres are in Buffalo. So now those three groups are just gonna sit around and do nothing all night for no real reason. Why not, I dunno, play the game that is ONLY the reason those three groups are in Buffalo anyhow?

The logistics of making up the game later are a huge headache. Playing it tomorrow doesn't make any sense. Are things going to be *better* tomorrow?

And the Canes *still* have to get back to Raleigh at some point for a game on Thursday.

Not playing the game tonight helps none of that. All it does is keep the 20 idiots off the road who want to say they were the only 20 people at an NHL game the night they got eight feet of snow. And those idiots will probably kill themselves drunk snowmobiling later tonight anyhow.

Well yeah, but it's not like it's super late or anything. I don't see this being outright canceled, even if it's meaningless. Too much $

The Charlotte Checkers' Bus Crash disagrees.

But seriously, players, staff and other people still have to get there. It's much more than fans.

Game can be played tomorrow if the canes/jackets game (in columbus) can be moved to the 14th or 15th.

Works for the teams schedules, haven't checked the arena schedule in columbus though.

I think this could be the most commonsense approach. Nationwide Arena is open on those dates and this wouldn't create a 3-in-3 situation for any of the teams involved.

Another (admittedly very weak) point is that Tyler Myers is suspended for the next three Sabres games. If we have to play this at the end of the year, presumably they'll have him in the lineup.

columbus doesn't play the 13th - 17th.

that might be the solution.

Given that everyone is already in Buffalo and air travel might be tricky anyway, definitely the best solution. Probably has to be announced quickly, though.

The only potential problem I could see is Columbus objecting to losing a weekend game to a mid-week game.
