You've been reasonable so far this thread, and I admit that if by top6 F or starting goalie you mean Ruutu or Khudobin, that's sounds fine. The people saying "good luck with that" are probably having different players in mind, when they hear those descriptions.
I think you've hit the nail on the head, or at least I hope so. I don't think the Oilers are out there searching for a borderline first liner, but a hard working 2nd liner with less offensive upside and more physicality and defensive awareness would be what I think they are after. Or, ideally, a solid #4 defenseman.

As far as the Sabres go: they say yes. Cap space isn't an issue, and we need scoring. Simple yes from me. He's only signed for 2 more years I believe. He'd be a good stop gap.

As far as the Oilers go: he's a top-4 defensemen ceiling-wise. 25 years old, still an RFA.

Take a guess: how many dmen on your roster have outscored Jamie McBain in any one season. Hell, use McBain's 2nd best season if you like.

I'll wait here.

One, once. Ferrence.

Gagner's 24, and over his career (which started when he was the youngest player in the NHL) he's ranked #68 for scoring amongst forwards at even-strength. He's an elite offensive second-liner with questionable defensive ability. Saying he's not offensively-minded or a 3rd liner is moronic.

I love how that word is used here. Tell me, how is Gagner elite 2nd liner, please?

And further, how many of them did it younger than 25? 28?

Yeah...he's not getting a return like that unless one of the other GMs go senile or have a senior moment or something.

Maybe he could fetch a goalie (or maybe him plus a bit extra), but that's only because goalies typically don't fetch much. The goalie market also isn't as good as it usually is at least as far as starting goalies go.

I'd do this, even if Kadri isn't exactly what we need. I'd try to flip Kadri in a package for another blueliner to be honest, but the value in this one is there I think.

What do we gain by adding Gagner and getting marginally better in the short term?

People should pay attention to the OR in this sentence. It's not unrealistic expectations.

Scoring in the short term and the ability to let our prospects marinate in lesser leagues. Grigs belongs in the AHL next year, and Gagner can play wing if one of thos eother guys needs a spot in the lineup. Hell, move him to wing anyhow. Straight swap for Stafford. I like it a lot.

This is a very fair assessment of Gagner. I do think that a similar deal could be had for Gagner although I do think Oilers would want someone more proven than someone similar than Kassian. Problem is they may not get someone more proven.

I think both sides would benefit. You need a puck moving D man that puts up points and we need a bit more grit at second line center.

Of course the 2nd would be 2015 like the other guy said.

I think both kadri and gagner would benefit with a change of scenery. Both are skilled.

So that makes him better than Landeskog? Is he better than Couture?

The entire premise is stupid from the get go... who cares about that entire period of time, and the lump sum total.... it's a preposterous measuring stick.

Maybe take a more realistic time frame... like the last 3 years...

The only issue is that the person you described is worth way more than Gagner BECAUSE of those things.

I'd rather have Staffords size, than Gagner's smalls... when considering that neither would be relevant long term...

Gagner, or no Gagner... the prospects can marinate.
