Philsophical Partner for Phaneuf

Dion is obviously a cornerstone of our long-term plans with his new deal and captaincy.

Its generally accepted that Gunnarsson not Gleason are legit top pairing defencemen.

Without naming names and spiralling into trade proposals / off season free agent acquisition plans, please describe the ideal partner for Dion (aside from Elisha)

Thought starters:
Stay at home or gambling puck mover?
Phyiscal or mobile?

Find the perfect match for Dion.

I don't think we need a specific type of player, OFD or DFD. We just need skill in general at any rate to be Dion's ideal partner

I don't think he needs a pure shut-down stay-at-home kind of guy, as his own shut-down abilities have grown leaps and bounds.

Honestly, the perfect partner for Dion Phaneuf is a clone of Dion Phaneuf. Both partners have offensive skill with very good shutdown capabilites along with a mean streak. Both sides of the ice are covered by well rounded Dmen that can play offense but are willing to sit back and play D.

I don't know who exactly that'd be. If I had to throw out a name for comparision sake (and if Dion Phaneuf isn't allowed), I'd say Shea Weber.

To get the most out of Dion, I think he has to be the Brent Seabrook to someone else's Duncan Keith. That way he can make those aggressive pinches like in Game 4 against Boston and get involved in lugging the puck up knowing there's someone who can cover his ass. Also, it's his hypothetical partner who has to set the pace of the breakout, regroup under pressure, etc, like the Kaberle for McCabe.

So ideally his partner is a smooth skating, heads up quarterback type defenseman.

Pair him up with an experienced 2-way defender who can play an effective shutdown role but is also mobile enough to start an offensive rush (think Suter/Bieksa/Hedman) and you have yourselves a legitimate defense core going forward.

Phaneuf - *Ideal D*
Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Rielly - Gleason

So we need another 7 million to make the 7 million dollar man good. If he's such a defensively sound dman, why not put Gardiner with him? Not like he's thriving where he is

I'll namedrop Kevin Westgarth as Dion Phaneuf's complementary blue liner.

Dion gave me the impression that he'll be the Good Cop to Kevin Westgarth's Bad Cop (I apologize in advance if this were the wrong analogy). Besides, Bernier himself has some familiarity with him.

You do not build around a Dion....you build around his replacement.

We need a D man like some on here mistakenly believe that Dion is. If Only he was like some on here believe we would be so much better....then we could pair Dion up with Gardinar or Reilly but he is not a Defensive D man who can partner with a Young offensive D man.

This is why Gunnar is his partner as he is the best Defensive D man that we have.

Too funny and true.....Dion himself needs a Defensive D man who can cover for his poor decisions......

So you're not going to watch another Leafs game for the next 7 years? Ok, lets see how long that lasts

right?

He needs a quarterback cause he can't do that
But then he needs a defensively sound guy so he can pinch
He also needs a guy that is offensive cause he isn't

Heaven forbid a captain can take a young player under his wing and make him better. You're all basically saying we need a veteran to babysit Phaneuf

id say the best philosophical partner for Dion would definitely be a Stoic, somebody like Marcus Aurelius or Zeno of Citium or Chrysippus.

He's always needed a partner to play with, he can only carry his partner so far.

Couple of things at play here.

Dion is an all around guy... Maybe not eye opening at anything, but solid in all areas.

He can be paired with a couple players. Gardiner/Rielly is an excellent fit, but that would mean Dion needs to play less against the other teams top lines (which maybe be a good thing depending on your view of Dion). If he's gonna play against top lines he needs a stay at home partner who is elite... Orpik and Girardi are upcoming UFAs

It's been noted other places... Pairings like Keith and Seabrook are allowed to freewheel while the pairing of Oduya and Roszival get the shutdown assignments. Personally I think this is what we should be striving for... We would get more out of Dion this way

Phaneuf & Gunner are not the problem

The team as a whole are playing too soft. And the other pairings have been mediocre at the best of times. Bolland will be a big boost eventually, but we need more jam out of our 2nd line & 3rd lines & more sound defense from the other pairings.

IMO this teams #1 goal should be finding Dion a partner to debate life's great questions with. Philosophical partners don't grow on trees though, so we might have to find one in the draft.

Am I doing it right?

If so find a similar player.
