#46| New York Islanders @ Colorado Avalanche | January 10th | 9:00pm |W 2-1 OT

Preview

All time series record: The Islanders lead 38-35-4. Islanders all time in Colorado are 15-22-3

Defense could come at a premium Friday night when Colorado hosts New York in a matchup of two offenses playing well.

The Avalanche have seven power-play goals on 14 chances over their last five games.

Meanwhile, the Islanders (16-22-7) are making their second stop on a season-long six game trip. They opened with a 5-3 win in Toronto on Tuesday, their fifth straight win away from home and fifth victory in six games overall.

It also marked the fourth time in New York's last five road games it scored five goals, with three coming in the final 20 minutes on Tuesday.

The Islanders had been abysmal away from home earlier in the season, losing 10 in a row from Nov. 5-Dec. 9 prior to their current 6-1-0 stretch.

New York, which has not won six straight road games since Oct. 5-26, 2001, has also enjoyed a 50.0 percent power-play success rate over its last five games with nine goals on 18 opportunities.

John Tavares and Thomas Vanek continue to lead the offense, with Tavares recording three assists Tuesday to push his point streak to seven games while Vanek's 17th assist extended his run to 10 games. Tavares has 16 points over his last seven contests while Vanek has 15 in 10 games.

The Avalanche had dropped four straight in the series prior to a 4-3 victory in the teams' last meeting on Nov. 10, 2011.

As usual nice GDT MattM. My wife and I will be in Disney for a week, but she was asking if its possible to stream the game - anyone know? I'm not knowledgeable on streaming so dummy it up

The Avs are a tough team still this season. It's going to be a good game.... Go Isles!!

thanks....

After their torrid start, the Avs have really cooled off. I don't know their L10 off hand, but I'm betting it's not too great.

Injuries to PAP and O'Reilly don't help either. I also thought the D was better than it is but when you look at them it's not much of a step above our own.

Goaltending they have the obvious advantage.

Our biggest + is our ridiculous 1st line. Just flat out stomping on people lately. Hope that can continue tonight! Isles take it 4-3 in an exciting back and fourth game.

They are 5-2-3 in their last 10 - not bad. Even though they are not playing as well as they did at the start I still believe they should not be taken lightly.

Agreed, the Islanders should be taking ANY TEAM lightly. So inconsistent they need to have the same compete level with every team--not good enough to be overlooking anyone.

In the Dallas win we looked like a different team ,and made Dallas look like what we usually are. However in no way should the team that is often overlooked be doing the overlooking. Great point trotts
Beat the lanche! Ps the only way our d could overlook something is if they were standing up on a bench.

MM - the second pairing has been MacDonald-Strait for the past couple games.

I've got a family party tonight so I'll be paying attention on my phone. Let's keep this rolling and get the 2 points!

You need to listen to the game on the radio again, keep the streak going.

I'm going to have a nice dinner so I can time my bowel movement right before the game. Its working, you can't question it.

I didn't see this before I posted. LOL.

If we win tonight, I'm going out and getting a case of Metamucil.

Let's keep quietly gathering pts, slowly moving up the standings.

Let's go Isles.

Saw Okposo, Grabner, Vanek, Martin and a couple other Islanders at dinner in Denver last night. I stared nearly the entire time

Good luck tonight.

Colorado's forward group is pretty weak right now, which will make it even more frustrating if the Isles can't get the two points tonight.

Let's show Duchene that Tavares is and always will be a better player.

The Isles are 3-10-3 VS the Metro division, and 13-12-4 VS Non Metro teams, how the **** does that happen?

I thought we should have drafted Duchene?

I am wholeheartedly on board with the 'race to the playoffs' emotion, but I do realize that this is the obstacle we may not be able to overcome. Go Isles. Just keep winning! And let the chips fall where they may.

Compete levels on a nightly basis. For whatever reason, this team seems like it can turn it on with certain top teams (Pittsburgh, Boston) and then just have a dud the very next night.

We need to continue to forecheck teams to death and dominate puck possession in the offensive zone. Win the SOG battle and pepper Varlamov all night. The less time we spend in our zone with our defense, the better. Colorado has got speed up front so it's going to be a test. CDH-Hammer are going to be busy with Duchene's line. The rest of the defense needs to hold up against Statny's line. It could be a high scoring affair.

We need to come out and jump on them early. We build a lead, we can control the flow of the game. Playing in altitude could be an issue in the 3rd period for us, we don't want to get behind.

Agreed. The Islanders need to avoid getting pinned in their own zone for extended periods of time which happened a lot before CdH came in.

To be honest, I think secondary scoring is going to be a difference maker tonight. Both the Isles and the Avalanche have upper echelon starpower up front, but the Isles have the better bottom six group of forwards.

We've proven we can play with any team in the league the past two weeks.

Would be nice to get at least another point out of this one.

Where's Rob Schremp when you need him?
