Matt Read Injury
December 31:

The initial update following the second period: Upper body injury for Matt Read, will not return tonight.

His last shift was with 1:37 left in the first period.

Post-game update:

Holmgren said he will know more about Matt Read's condition tomorrow. The good news: He did NOT have to be hospitalized.

January 2:

Quote:
Following the morning skate in Colorado, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced that Matt Read will not be in the line-up vs. Avalanche.

"Matt Read will not play tonight at Colorado. He has an upper-body injury and remains day to day," said Holmgren.

Read, who did not skate with the team in the morning, appeared in 6:24 of ice-time, taking only seven shifts before leaving in the first period on Tuesday in the Flyers' 4-1 win at Calgary.

January 4:

Matt Read skated but did not participate in the full morning skate prior to the game. He is not expected to play at Phoenix.

January 6:

Quote:
Read update
Matt Read (upper body) did not skate. A review of his last shift on the ice against Calgary shows two rather innocent checks against Read. A guess for the cause of his injury? A shoulder pinned up against the boards, but nothing that stands out on video.

Quote:
Following the first period, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced that left wing Michael Raffl would not return due to a concussion.

Raffl suffered the injury midway through the first period after appearing in just eight shifts for a total of 4:27 of ice time.

According to Sam C., Read "apparently" was hit in the head by an elbow.

I think I saw him get hit by one of Calgary's goons, either Westgarth or McGratten. Looked like a hit to the head but nothing serious.

Hopefully it's not a serious injury. We need him to keep this streak alive

FWIW... (regarding Matt Read)

I don't think it's a concussion... I get the sense he's going to play in Phoenix on Saturday.

Well now is that opportunity some people wanted to change the top line. Not sure how well it will pan out.

I'm surprised more people aren't pissed about this injury to Raffl. It was directly from behind to a guy without the puck. Total ******** play.

That line had already cooled off.

Raffl - Giroux - Voracek last 5 games:
12/21 @ CBJ: 0 goals, -1
12/23 vs MIN: 1 goal, +1
12/28 @ EDM: 0 goals, -2
12/30 @ VAN: 2 goals, +2
12/31 @ CAL: 0 goals, even

3 goals and even at ES the last 5 games, shut out 3 times.

I hope he is back soon too because our lack of depth in the bottom-6 is going to get exposed even more.

Oh let me point out "how bad G and V are playing with Raffl". Too bad Raffl has had 9 of his 11 points off the first line, and G and V's point streaks didn't start until after they were playing with him. Also, Hartnell has scored almost half his points since being moved off the top line. You think stats are the telling story, but the line has generated good possession and pressure with Raffl.

Who made that awesome pass to Giroux in the Van game again? Exactly. Say what you want about Raffl, but he complements that line.

Just another Philly fan complaining about anything eh?

The line had already cooled off. They were stalemated over the course of the last 5+ games and were no longer putting up time line production. I'm not sure how long the afterglow of a hot 4-game stretch is supposed to last.

I wouldnt be in favor of Simmer going to the top line with the current injury situation. Jake and Simmer on the same line would mean getting killed defensively.

So because they are "cooled off" means that they shouldnt play together anymore? Downie-Couturier-Read "cooled off" but people on these boards agree that they should still be a line. The point is that Raffl is a good compliment to that line, like Downie became a good compliment to Couturier and Read.

I would try Lecavalier there. Schenn's line is starting to click a bit so I'd leave them together, if you try Vinny with Jake and G maybe he gets going, and that lets you leave Couturier's line alone if/when Read returns.

If Read isn't ready then I'm not sure what the plan is. Somebody (McGinn?) will need to come up.

I may not have seen the hit from the best angle, but was it not a dirty hit? Looked like he was hit from behind when he didnt even touch the puck

puck or not, it was from behind

I thought it was a ******** move by Landeskog. It wasn't a hard shove, but one that shouldn't have even been made with Raffl in that position. Maybe not a major/suspension worthy offense, but someone should have gone after Landy later on in the game because of it.

Love Raffl and think he could be the perfect player for our bottom-6 if this team can transition into a cup contender. Reminds me of a Marcus Kruger or Trevor Lewis type of player except he's a winger (duh).

Hope he fully recovers in a timely manner. Hope Read plays on Saturday, too.
