OK. Let's backtrack to how this started; You say that if JFJ trades McCabe instead of buying him out, he is stupid.

I went on to cordially explain that buying him out, which you are in favor of, would net the Leafs nothing in return, and they would have to pay 2/3 of his salary for each remaining year.

Then, I explained that if he traded McCabe, which you are against, he would not have to pay the millions for a buyout, plus would get something in return.

Now, in my opinion as a Chartered Financial Analyst, I feel that paying nothing, and getting something (no matter how small) is better than paying MILLIONS and getting nothing. Call me crazy, Call me unconventional.....fine.

The mere suggestion that a buyout is preferrable to a trade is downright laughable.

A buyout is employed when a player cannot be traded - You recieve nothing when you buyout a player. When you trade a player you gain assets.
Honestly, think before you type.

I don't think a regualr IQ test should be administered...
but I was thinking about this the other day...

You should be required to pass a NHL/hockey IQ test,
being asked several questions about teams, GMs, CBA,
divisions, schedules, rules, salaries, etc...

You would only be able to register upon scoring a 100%
score...

Some poeple who post here just don't understand why teams
do certain things, or want to be a GM, but would be the
laughing stock of the league if they ever were....

the leafs could land more than a pick for mccabe... he's a solid dman offensively and defensively. He's got good leadership qualities regardless of his mouth and inflated ego he's great.

Please read the entire thread for context.

The pick was to make a point that even a 7th round pick is better than nothing.......we were not discussing his market value or what it would take to acquire him.

If the Leafs wanted to trade McCabe, they'd find a market for him without a doubt, especially with UFA d-men rapidly disappearing.

That said, I'm not sure how much good 3.25m of cap space helps the Leafs. They'd still need several players to ice a competitive team and would now also need a top-pairing defenseman.

why the fuss over mccabe? he is retired- there is a cap, therefore he is done playing for the rest of his life.

now lets get back to important stuff like, ummmm, inability to log on to this site during regular business hours

As a Leaf Fan, I am aware Toronto is in a sticky situation. Rumours abound Lindros and Allison are going to sign once physicals are completed to determine good health, for league minimum with bonuses hidden within the injury clause. If that turns out to be acurate, they will have 28 million committed to 17 NHL players and some added to minor league prospects that may or may not play in Toronto this year. So, basically, they need to add 2 wingers and a defenseman. One winger for line 1 and the other for line three and a defenseman to guide the power play.

I don't think they will get a defenseman they need so they may as well dress a prospect like Coliacovo or Hedin and give them a shot. That will add $800,000 to the salary for a total just under $29mil. That leaves about $6-7mil for two more wingers and gives them about $3mil in reserve for injuries and late season acquisitions, if necessary.

The possibility of adding players like Thornton or Lecavalier seem a little remote. Although it is possible that these two are available, I don't think Toronto could come up with a competitive package.

Sundin leaving via a trade is probably not going to happen.

it will be interesting to see what happens in Leaf land over the next week. Personally, the money being paid right now is ridiculous and I would not want to Leafs to enter into the current feeding frenzy of brain dead GM's.

Seriously? Foote (one dimensional) for $4.6mil? Aucoin for $4mil? Satan for $4mil? ... and the list goes on. If that is what it is going to take to get an above average player, the rest of the league can have them. I'll take my chances with injury prone minimum salary guys on a one year contract and roll my dice.

Wtf is up with you people? McCabe is a mobile defense man who is well above and average skater. So what I would like to know is why do you feel he is over rated and why do you feel that his salary is worse then say Aucoin or Foot or someone like that. I do think the bigger defense man who re lie more on there size to push to the outside or clutch and grab to slow down the coming forwards will find it hard pressed to play in the New NHL. As for those who knock Kaberle well I have a feeling alot of you guys are going to have a different outlook at the seasons end because he imo will put up career highs in both points and +/-. I do think there are still players out there that can help Toronto and what they have to do is hope to A either recindle someones scoring like a Selanne for example and take gambles on guys like Anson Carter in hopes he returns to the solid player he once way. I don't see Toronto falling from grace. I do agree though that they may not put up the points the did in the past few years but I think a middle of the pack finish is going to be reasonable for this club again this season. People don't forget Toronto is not the only team that looks weaker on paper.

I have been laying back and not making comments up to now, but I think this has gone to far. What I really do not understand is the following:

How in the hell has Philly improved themselves so much in your eyes?

Clarke himself admits that the players he signed are a risk especially with the new rule changes. The only decent acquisition that he has made is Forsberg but even that comes with a price (quite possibly JR). So you have replaced one superstar with a better one. But after that they have let go both Amonte and LeClair, even though they scored very little the last season how much do they have to replace those players. The d-men they got (Rathje, Therien, and Hatcher) will be pilons for the new rule changes. What good are big d-men if the quick forwards are going to dance around them now that they are cracking down on obstruction and no red line. And two more words that will haunt Philly all year ROBERT ESCHE!!!! Most over-rated goalie in the league.

Has Ottawa gotten better?

I say not. Hasek is huge question mark and for those that question Belfour's health should think twice about what Ottawa has. But other then that change they have done nothing....oh wait didn't they pick some guy up named CAMEL!!!!

Has anyone in the East gotten better?

I say other then Boston and Pittsburgh everyone else is either worse or has not changed at all. New Jersey is worse on defence with all 3 of their top d-men unsigned. NYR replaced Holik with garbage and have lost possibly Lindros as well. NYI gets rid of Peca, Hamrlik, Jonsson and adds Satan, Malik. Not better if you ask me. Montreal is status quoue!!!!

So explain to me how the Leafs will not make the playoffs. I have lost all respect for anyone that believe's the Leafs were wrong in not signing Roberts and Niewendyke. To 2 individuals that are wrong in this are Roberts and Niewendyke. To people I thought would be the last to be as greedy as they are. Instead of rewarding a franchise that has done everything in their power over the last 3 years to try and win a Stanley Cup with the both of them on your their team. The reason T.O is in this mess is because they were trying to win. But they walk because the money is better and they are disrespected ... I would have understood if it was to a team like Ottawa or Detroit but Florida. Joe/ Gary thanks a bunch for nothing, you 2 are nothing but scum bags and T.O is a better place without you. You have disrespected all of T.O not the other way around. Enjoy your time in Florida dwindling at the bottom of the standings.

As for Leaf fans, either stay on or jump off the ship. The Leafs will do fine. we have replaced Nolan with O'Neill. We will replace Niewendyke with Allison. We will replace Robrts with Lindros. We will bring back Mogilny and Domi. If not I am sure we will do something. But for now stop the whining and let JFJ do his job. He is there because he knows what he is doing.

BlueForever,
Roberts and Niewendyke were a package deal, with Roberts the catalyst in going to Florida. He is known to be a friend of Jacques Martin.

Who do they really need to sign to improve? They already have a solid core, with strong defence and speedy forwards. Maybe some more grit, but who cares? Their in alot better shape then alot of other teams out there. They dont need to dismantle their team to stay afloat.

And you question Hasek? Whens the last time hes one a cup? Now whens the last time Belfours won a cup?

All Im saying is that signings arnt everything. Dismantling a core team to get a 7MIL player is not the right thing to do.

I won't speak on behalf of the other teams fans...but for Montreal, their hardly what you call status quo...

Out-Stephane Quintal, Joe Juneau, Andreas Dackell, Yannick Perreault, Darren Langdon, Patrice Brisebois

In-Mike Komisarek, Radek Bonk, Alexei Kovalev, Alexander Perezhogin, Mathieu Dandenault...

Not a Stanley Cup contender just yet, but definately a better team than last year, and one, who at the deadline can make an important move to become a contender, but they're already a playoff team

I am a Sens fan. But I can admit that Philly is better than last year.

Forsberg >>> JR

Ottawa will pretty much be the same team, but more experienced.

Exactly. They have no one to blame but themselves for their sorry state of affairs. Thats just my opinion. They have alot to do in the future and they really need to actually develop players now, instead of trying to buy themselves a cup. Their almost as bad as New York. Only difference is Toronto won every once in a while,

A lot of you are jumping into specifics without identifying the problem at hand, which is Toronto's lack of quality prospects (HF has them at 27th). They keep trying to build through free agency but just can't get it right. Thanks to the salary cap's levelling of the playing field, having more money no longer gives them an advantage.

LMAO!!!! It would be the Leafs that would have to throw in a dman, prospect and draft picks for that trade. And even then the Wings wouldn't be stupid enough to pull that deal.
