Injury updates:

Timonen: is 'ok' and will join the Flyers on their road trip. No way of telling how bad it is for real, but I don't think the Olympics are in danger.

Barkov: No structural damage in knee, so it's probably a minor sprain. Should play on Saturday, but we'll see. I still think they want to be very conservative with his injury.

Koivu: Said last week there's no doubt in his mind that he will be good to go for the Olympics. Not guaranteed to play before the Austria game, but apparently he's day-to-day and might play next week after all.

Pens fan here.

I was just wondering if there has been any type of talk about what type of role Maatta is going to have at Sochi.

He's number three on most people's depth chart behind Timonen and Salo. Likely second pairing at ES and secondary special teams role.

I'd say about the same role as in Pittsburgh, 2nd/3rd pair with a try on PP/PK

Good to hear, i wasn't sure if he would get a top 4 role just because some coaches have a hard time trusting young players.

You guys really have a really good player in Maatta, i bet he ends up being your # 1 def for the next 12 to 15 years in international play.

Based on skill and performance, he should be in the 2nd PP unit and in the top 4 on ES. It's a little hard to predict who he will play with, because we don't know if the coach is willing to break up Timonen and Salo, which IMO should be done to get the best top 4. Guessing they will rely on other guys than Määttä on PK, but I think in general people have a lot of confidence that he will do well and could possibly even get more responsibility as the tournament goes on.

Granlund is on fire. 5 points in his last 2, 15 in his last 18 games. Interesting to see if he's able to dominate in big ice like in 2011.

Sounds like a groin injury. I fear we might have to do without him and Barkov.

Looks like he should be fine.

Losing Valtteri Filppula would be serious drawback for team Finland, hopefully he's fine in the Olympic Games! He is the best Finnish point scorer right now, and second best center after Mikko Koivu. Also as a fan of the Lightning of the Tampa Bay, I would like to see him playing before the Olympics And it is nice that Sami Salo is healthy again, he is important player for both team Finland and Lightning.

Erkka expects Barkov to play in Sochi. Same with Koivu. As figured, he doesn't know about Filppula yet. Hope he's ok.

Also says Bergenheim, Immonen and Hartikainen are the first injury replacements.

At the same time OJ's gone cold. No points in 6 games. 3+1 in the last 10.

So how do you think a novice like him will perform in a best-on-best environment when every player he plays aginst will be better then he goes up against on average in the NHL? Total dominance?

Filppula's injury doesn't seem to be serious. Didn't skate today, but doesn't look like he's in danger of missing the Olympics.

How's that relevant in any way? Finland doesn't have 12 better forwards than him, probably not even 6. The fact that he's shown he can handle it in the NHL is nothing but a good thing, because that's a hell of a lot more than you can say of some of Finland's forwards. If him and a few others can't cut it, then nobody from Finland can. That's all that matters.

Total dominance would be nice to see but not expecting it

If I recall correctly he's performed well in past WC games, so expect to see at least one of these per game...

I expect him to do well. He's made great improvements from last year to this year and the big ice definitely helps his game
