i know the press is saying it like the boxer, but they've been wrong before
i've been saying it like the goalie, but i would hate to be wrong if i ever meet him....

It is pronoounced like the boxer. RJ pronounces it like that and RJ is the man!

He's from a small town outside Ottawa called Rockland which is mostly french speaking that's maybe why you hear a touch of an accent. But it's prounounced Roy for sure.

Nobody in the Roy household has an accent. His dad, who is from Ottawa, may have a very slight French accent. His mom is from Kingston where you won't hear much French spoken. Derek originally from Ottawa, moved to Rockland from Ottawa (15 minutes east of Ottawa) when he was 9 years old. At the time, that part of Rockland was known as Clarence Creek.

The correct pronounciation of the Roy name in french is RRRuh but the Roys simply use Roy as in Roy Rogers.

That's right. Derek was asked before which way he prefers and he said Roy.
