Guys I want at #17 (realistic)
Yeah no thanks to Honka. The value isn't good at #17.
Also the track record of taking undersized offensive defensemen in the first round is pretty iffy. You can find a similar player in the second round & take on less of a risk. Honka himself could even fall to the second round because of these reasons.
how about we keep future 2nd and 3rd round picks and try to draft some flying-under-the-radar forwards with skill?
The Phantoms roster is loaded with reclaimation projects, undrafted players and bottom of the barrel scraps which is clearly not the winning environment for young players Hextal is talking about
Well honestly the common misconception is that the good AHL teams are filled with top prospects. This just in not true. Most of the good teams are filled with 50-75% AHL vets. The way the Flyers havent signed any undrafted UFAs so far and the way Hextall talked about the Phantoms, wouldnt be surprised if they go 50-50 vets and rookies.
Waste of pick, and people are just being ignorant if they can't see that. If it was a 5th rounder okay. But it wasn't. If we keep making picks like that why even keep our 3rds.
You can't really call it a waste of a pick until it actually turns out to be that. Sure, there is a lot working against him to ever make the NHL, but the same goes for other 3rd rounders. You don't have to like the pick, but he could very well turn out to be an effective fourth line player. Could he have been drafted later? Perhaps, but the Flyers didn't seem to think so. No point in acting like a different player that you really no little to nothing about would have been a better pick because at this pick, as far as I know, no one chosen after him has played an NHL game yet...
