I'd like to get a player like Kulikov, who could play with either PK or Emelin and let guys like Gorges, Diaz and Murray fight it out with the rookies for the remaining roster spots.

Tinordi and Gorges would make a good bottom pairing, imo.

Next season:

Without going to the FA/Trade route, we hopefully will have the sense to let Tinordi/Beaulieu/Pateryn break into the lineup.

Gorges-Subban
Markov-Emelin
Tinordi-Beaulieu/Diaz (if re-signed)
Pateryn

It basically hinges on whether MT and MB would accept such youth in our Dcore. If Diaz is re-signed, then we'll be hurting ourselves because it'd be hard to move him and eventually we need to just give our guys a shot.

If going to FA/Trade route, we need to go hard for Girardi. This guy might be expensive, and while we have money tied up in our Dcore, getting rid of Murray/Diaz/Boullion's combined salary should make it okay considering the rookies won't be a cap issue.

We need a veteran defensive guy, RH shot, size and a fit for MT's shot blocking system.

Emelin-Subban
Markov-Girardi
Gorges-Tinordi
Beaulieu/Pateryn

-Gorges would excel at 3rd pairing duties
-Girardi Gives us the much needed second righty in our top4
-Emelin Finally gets to play LD, where he can benefit from staying back for Subban to rush, while providing more of an offensive threat that Gorges, thus teams will have to play PK differently.
-Markov remains with a physical guy who will benefit from the Markov effect
-Slower transition for the young guys, but they will get their shot.

Like I said it might seem risky to tie up so much $$$ in the Dcore, but with the cap going up it should be fine, and as Gorges contract goes on he will be very tradeable when the rookies become regulars.

Honestly the players like Gorges so I can't see him being moved. Hopefully by the end of his contract he's on the third pairing though. I can't see Gorges being a top 4 dman on a contender.

No doubt that was a head scratcher. Why sign a guy to a deal while he's still out with a serious knee injury? They should have waited to see him play (which has been sub-par) and would have been able to get him at a lower cost and maybe shorter term.

You said our defense is terrible and I showed you an example of what terrible is. Obviously the Habs defense is nowhere near the Leafs...so they are not terrible. You won't find 10 better defense cores in the NHL this year.

Like usual you talk out your a$$ with no semblance of logic.

Obviously someone younger would be ideal but with so many young defense coming up it'd be better to get someone on a short-term contract.

Markov - Subban
Emelin - Gorges
Tinordi/Beaulieu - Robidas
Drewiske

Best case is both Beaulieu and Tinordi impress during the year and they're both in our top 6 by the end of next year.
Would be a good fit, but I'm sure he acn di better as a UFA, a team like Toronto is desperate for a top 4 d-man would surely give him 3-4 mil/year over 2-3 years.

Kulikov right now is a downgrade on Gorges.

plus, you can't have Kulikov, Gorges and Diaz in your lineup at the same time, then you use Gionta's cap hit and have no forward to replace him...too much money on defense.

You have Emelin Gorges Markov Subban top 4, about 22 mil. Then spend 4-5 mil on your #5-6-7-8 Murray or UFA(1 mil +/- 200k) Drewiske and 2 of Nygren Beaulieu Tinordi Pateryn.

I see us moving Diaz by the deadline and promoting Pateryn.

Knowing that the market won't be great and our cap space is somewhat reserved for future RFA's.. I can see no other solution but :

Markov - Subban
Emelin - Gorges
Diaz - Tinordi

Oduya Ference Mitchell Scuderi Salvador Fayne were top 4 guys on teams that got to the cup final. Goirges is easily as good as those guys.

Subban, Markov, Gorges and Emelin are the main pieces. Keep drewiske or Murray in case of injuries and give Tinordi, Pateryn or Beaulieu a chance.

I'd wave Diaz and Bouillon a warm goodbye.

Also, I'd be willing to part ways with Gorges if he's part of a trade. I don't think he's bad - he's surely not having the greatest season - but he's still a solid defenseman most of the nights.

Diaz may be more expensive than we are willing to pay. Though his numbers have dropped a bit which may limit his value...

For me Diaz seems like the kind of guy that will give us the hometown discount (Streit style) , hopefully this time we don't make the same mistake.

Markov - Subban
Streit - Gorges
Diaz - Emelin

Would have been awesome.

The issue with Diaz IMO is he has not been the secondary scorer he's supposed to be. And while his positioning and stickwork has improved, if he can't produce points (or hit the net) he has to go and we should let Beaulieu and Tinordi replace his contributions for much cheaper, while bringing other dimensions to the table

Gorges overall is in their class, sure. but he lacks the physical element to his game and if he's going to be a #4 on a contender, there would have to be a hell of a top3 ahead of him.

-Gorges has to stop being Subban's partner, I'm sick of it. With them together, we just play not to lose (which causes us to lose)
-Gorges should be a #4 at best, and that's while being paired with the right kind of partner.

I like Gorges, but as depth. He doesn't have the talent to be a big cog in the machine. He certainly has heart, but that isn't talent.

Habs are so desperate now for another francophone Quebec that they're practically ready to sign Dagenais again.

When you see that ad with Briere teasing Gallagher for being short, you realize it's cuz there's nobody else on the team that they could choose from.

Markov - Subban
Emelin - ?
Gorges - Tinordi

That's what i'd be rolling with next year. I'd move Gorges if we could but i'm not holding my breath.

My 2014-15 defense:

Emelin - Subban
Markov - Gorges
Tinordi - Diaz (if good contract, not overpaid and not long-term, or else we can do without)

Pateryn
Drewiske

Thought about this for a bit.. Markov.. lets not Rush it, wait until after the Olympics and another month afterwards or even summer. Is Markov just a stop gap for now? at some point we have to play Tinordi and Beaulieu. if just a stop gap, perhaps we should part company.. with all due respect of course!

Does anyone think Ellis has a chance at making a push for next season?

Tinordi
Pateryn

Playing great in the AHL.

Beaulieu has been decent, I would say but fully great.

Ellis has been alright as well and solid.

Got good depth guys potentially and the guys all have great size.

My fear is that Bergevin trades a solid prospect for a futile cup run. We have three kids ready to step in next season. Make room for them

I think that if Hamilton made a decision to call someone up and Ellis and Dietz were the choices, Dietz would be brought up. Ellis will be packaged I believe

Sad part is if we kept McDonagh, this D corps wouldn't change one bit since everyone was drafted or already here.

I've always been a fan of Ellis, but at this point I don't see much opportunity for him with the habs as long as Tinordi, Beaulieu, and Pateryn are around. I'm thinking he gets traded in some kind of package deal.
