Is it really smart to rush these kids this year? I think both of these guys bode well for the isles future but haven't we seen kids get rushed and in the long run, hurt them?
The isles need to play kids that are a little older in mapletoft and Weinhandl to really see what they have......Let gervias and Bergenheim develop and get minutes because if we are in a tight race all year, they won't get the minutes they need to mature...
maybe just play them for 10 games and see what they have ?
They are two completely different cases. Bergenheim was a first rounder last year who is now 19 and has been playing against mature players in Finland. It is not uncommon for prospect like that to be ready for the NHL at that age. Of the two I'd be more confident that he's ready to take that next step.
Gervias is a complete surprise. An 18 yo sixth rounder getting this far on a team that already has seven or eight proven NHL defensemen really says something about this kid. He could easily wind up being the biggest steal of the draft and he finally gives the team a real defensive prospect. However, IMO he should go back to juniors and get quality playing time. Unfortunately, his junior team is lousy and there is talk that they could trade him sometime this year. So that might effect his overall development.
