What's the point of putting that line in if, no how no way, it's impossible to change what he's making for the "current" year?

This is the situation that I see this line preventing:

Team is right at the cap of $39M. Player wants to extend his contract and get a raise at the same time. He can't do this under the rules because it would put his team over the cap. He can, however, extend his contract for less money. Like King Blazer said, it seems like it's saying that the averaging out of any extensions is what is counted against the cap. I wouldn't be surprised if, at the press conference, DT announces that JR has signed an extension (for a really low amount), since he would've probably made this a condition for the trade (assuming it's legal, of course).

If they extend a player to a larger salary in the extension his average salary would increase and as such, so would his CAP figure. THAT would still have to fit in the club's upper limit for the current year.

Example: Player is in the final year of a contract and making $1million and his CAP number is $1 million. They extend him for 1-year at $2 million. His CAP number becomes $1.5 million. They have to be able to fit the $1.5 under the team limit in the current year...

edit: I see above that we're thinking along the same lines...

Right, King Blazer. That's exactly what I meant. Your example is the same as mine.

Hopefully DT will identify the future considerations at the press conference, but I would expect that the Flyers will get a draft pick or a player, or a combination of picks and/or players, based on how Roenick performs this year and/or whether he is re-signed by the Kings. For example, if he plays 75 games and scores a certain number of points, maybe the Flyers get a first rounder -- meaning the consideration was moving up two rounds. Or perhaps there are pools of players they can pick from, like the way we acquired Jared Aulin. Could be just about anything.

Don't be so sure -- UFA next year. Would you stay in Boston if you were him? I sure wouldn't.

So the Kings can get his cap number down by adding a year to his final year (this year) at less than what he is making for this season??

I'm not sure if this was posted earlier but if I am not mistaken Roenick is a FA after the year. We aquired a pretty good player for peanuts and his large salary figure will come off the books after the year and hopefully he will resign for a much lower price. With that being said it really opens up the books for next years strong FA class. So although he is older and earns more money than most of us would like it looks like it will pay off in the future.

JR is going to stay in LA. LA is one of the few teams JR wanted to go to, the other ones are within the Kings' division.

Frankly, I'm excited for the Kings. This has been a pretty good week aside from Niedermayer signing with the Mighty Sucks....

Just want to say that as a Flyer fan, I am happy you guys got Roenick. He is great guy, of course you know that, but I hope he plays great for y'all. He gives everything he's got. You'll love him. I'm just glad the Flyers don't have to play y'all often.

I officially found out about this trade at about 10 am today and I was VERY happy. I was surprised that Roenick was rumored to go to LA but I was hoping it would happen. He's going to be a very good top 6 forward for us who also brings a physical element and a great attitude. I think the Kings will still go after Palffy and sign him to a 3 year deal but if they don't then I think we will sign Kariya. Our payroll will be at about 36 million and with all the ticket sales and jersey sales the Kings will gain from these signings I think their going to reach 36 mill.

SIGN PALFFY AND GO FOR THE CUP!!!

Funny...a year ago people here were talking about completely re-building.

Man.. this new CBA is going to mess with my head.
Do a one year extension for 1 mill, then buy him out next year and take a mill cap hit.

This is why I have a problem with JR:

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl...2/ai_114630337

Quote:
"This is the second year we are playing behind [coach Ken Hitchcock's] system and I think everyone really understands how this is going to work for us," Roenick says. "He's won a Stanley Cup, he's won divisions. Everyone who plays here adheres to the system and I think coaching has a lot to do with our success."
He says stuff like this...he'd said it once before shortly after Hitchcock was hired and compared himself to Yzerman and Modano in terms of being an offensive player who was learning as he got older to play a better TEAM game and would do "whatever it takes" to win a Cup with Hitchcock.

And then just a couple weeks later he rags on Hitchcock and says he hates his system and he's not going to play it.

That's just not the kind of guy who's gonna win a Cup. IMO, you need guys who LISTEN to the coach and will PLAY the coach's system...JR ain't one of them.

A bridge for a car? Or a bridge for a mouth?

Either way, I'm interested.

I think this is a good move for the NHL in general. Now the FACE of the NHL is in L.A. An even bigger market than Philadelphia. He can attract new fans to the game along with Sidney Crosby.

I don't think its gonna take long for the NHL to make it back. With the new rule changes to the NHL, the new CBA.. I *think* people are like, "hey, lets give this thing a chance," instead of just turning away from it.

I can't wait for the NHL to come back.
