In the offseason, hopefully. Let him finish a full 82 game season for once.

B Schenn is playing great if he keeps it up his price will go up better to sign him now then later i think.

Should also mention that Steve Mason's deal does NOT include a no-trade clause

Now, all of the sudden, Mason is simply "pedestrian", but the turnovers and gaffes have not stopped. Coburn has been absolutely BRUTAL, despite logging a ton of minutes. Timonen hasn't been fantastic defensively (or offensively). Steady Grossmann has had his share of womp womps this season.

Even after a couple of tough recent games, his SV% is .917, which is exactly the same as Bob and MAF. It's better than goalies are who better than him, including Lundqvist and Halak. So, I'm not sure what the problem is with locking up a guy who is still in a good position in terms of stats, attitude, and keeping the Flyers in games. 4 million is probably a steal.
well like I said. I want to see how Mason is when it matters. right now he has shown he is a streaky goalie. got hot and now he is in a funk. Is that all on him? probably not but hes not making the saves he was in October and November.
I want to see how he handles playoff pressure or at the very least hockey in late March and early April when they could be fighting for their playoff lives.
I do agree that this defensive group as a whole isnt very good. Dont really have a group of defenseman who compliment each other well. they are kinda just thrown together.

Congratulations Mason, you deserve it.

I believe it's a well calculated moment to resign Mason. The last couple of games he somehow lost his swagger just when they are right in the middle of the play-off position war.

It will give him the boost to regain his mental focus. I really look forward for the tough games against the Western upper team now when Mason will be super motivated.

I'm fine with this, it's not a steal from any side. Pretty much his value.

Maybe it's because of what we went through watching Leighton and Bryz, but I never feel going into a game that Mason will be the team's Achilles' heel. Very rarely does he not give this team a chance to win. And if they didn't re-sign Mason to a deal like this, what would be the alternative?

Congrats Mason. The contract is fair value I'd say.

Hopefully he can play like October and November and shut the haters up.

Here are a few comments by Sam, some of which have a point of emphasis:

https://twitter.com/BroadStBull

Quote:
Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 10m Now if only the #Flyers can add a stud D-man to help Mason....

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 11m Considering that Price signed a 6 yr deal for $6.5M per year in 2012,#Flyers got a bargain with Mason (3 years, $4.1M per).

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 15m This is not a knock on Bryz _ who I like _ but the locker room is so much more cohesive with Mason.

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 17m Mason's attitude makes him one of the most popular players on the team. That should not be overlooked. He adds greatly to team chemistry.

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 17m Mason, who will start tonight vs. Isles, has good numbers, and is a GREAT teammate who takes responsibility for his play.

Sam Carchidi ‏@BroadStBull 22m I thought Mason would get at least $4.5M per, so Flyers did well. And Mason gets security of knowing he is here for 3 1/2 more yrs.

It seems like a good deal. Not too many years, not too much money.

I like it. Even while Mason's play has trailed off slightly as of late, it's a statement of trust by the organization at a fair price. And hearing that Mason is a great locker room presence makes it even better.

What makes it better, is that it is the perfect length to that when it ends, Stolarz might be able to start for us.

I'm fine with the term. I think he's overpaid by about 600K a year, though.

I like the length of it, would've guessed about 500k/year lower but with the cap going up it's no problem.

Perhaps a bit to early for Stolarz to be a starter but I could se a 1a, 1b situation developing with Mason and Stolie at that time.

One thing we can all agree on:

Mason is light years better than Bryz and the Flyers signed him to a fair contract that is MUCH better than Bryz's contract. Flyers win

My guess is that it was a response to the comparison made earlier by Mason's agent:

http://www.csnphilly.com/hockey-phil...s-way-looks-it

Quote:
Thun equates his client to Montreal’s Carey Price, who also happens to be in the Team Canada Olympic picture.

“I think Price is a very good comparable,” Thun said.

Mason won’t get a six-year, $39 million offer like Price, but he is pretty much assured of making at least $4 million a season.

Their numbers are close: Price has a 2.00 goals-against average with a .937 save percentage; Mason has a 2.14 GAA and .932 save percentage.

The Flyers signed Mason for less than his previous deal ($3.1 million) in Columbus because he was on a down cycle with a bad club. Mason needed a fresh start and the Flyers offered him that.

Even if his save percentage has been sub par the last 20 or so games. He makes highlight reel saves every night. All you can ask for.

Would have liked for it to be under 4 but I like the length so all in all I'm happy with it. I know he's had his struggles as of late but the team as a whole defensively has been worse so there's that to consider as well.
