Stephen Weiss - Would you take him back?

SW has had a horrible start of his Red Wings career. If he was willing to waive his NMC and move back to Florida, would you want him back? And how much of his salary would the Wings have to pay?

Nope, the Red Wings can keep him or buy him out.

There were many times when I really loved Weiss here, he had a lot of heart and soul, and could sometimes change the game. But he also made very poor decisions with his injuries and probably became disheartened with the Panthers when he wasn't named captain.

However, for once, the Panthers appeared to have dodged a bullet in re-signing him. He wanted too much money for what he had produced, I mean he's a 60 point guy at best, and the Panthers weren't willing to pay it. I'm surprised it was Detroit who did but I also figured if he could succeed somewhere, it would be there. Sorry to say it's not working out there right now.

And no, no chance the Panthers take him back. They are looking forward, not back. They have too many center prospects to possibly entertain bringing Weiss back. It was the impetus for drafting Barkov.

Yeah, I loved Weiss when he was down here, and have a lot of respect for how he wore the Panthers jersey, but that is in the past. Im happy with our center depth now, because its filled with speed, skill, and also size, which Weiss lacked. Even if he were to come back, where do you put him? He would be an overpaid 3rd line center for us, because I would not put him ahead of Barkov or Bjugstad.

Love Weiss, hope he can bounce back, but the team didn't offer him a contract. He's not coming back now.

Wouldnt mind taking him for 2,5 M, but Wings wil never trade him with a 2,4M retained salary.

Too banged up. Don't think he'll be able to get back to his best ever again, but who knows.

Guy did a lot for this franchise though, and it won't be overlooked.

Like Booth, nothing but respect for him and what he did here, but that ship has sailed.

Barkov, and to a lesser extent Bjugs, has shown me more in his rookie season than Weiss did in a decade. Good riddance!

I love the guy and I was disappointed when we didn't re-sign him. However, I would never take him back on that contract.
Its funny, the past 3-4 years I saw him as one of the most underpaid players in the league and felt he deserved a contract with a cap hit of approximately 4.5 mil. Now that he has it, I wouldn't touch it even with a very long stick.

Id take him back if bought out as a 3rd C on a max salary of 1.75 like matthias. Not a penny more

I can't believe you think we'd be dumb enough to bring him back now that he's proven himself as unworthy of the contract we didn't think he deserved in the first place.

Maybe you haven't heard of Barkov yet, but I know for sure you and Pavel have heard of Bjugstad.

Weiss will go down as one of my all-time favorite Panthers and players in the league for many years due to his dedication and passion over more than a decade here, but there is absolutely no reason to take him back for anything. As others have said earlier, the team is focusing on the future and there is no way he can be a part of it. There is no place in the roster for him and it would just set us back when we're beginning to see the brightness of the future in the near horizon.

i would say maybe, if he came in at around 2.5 to 3, and play him as the 3rd line center, but we have trocheck moving forward so id probably say no, unless he was really really cheap.

Weiss's decline began after we traded Jokinen. Management thought Weiss could step into the 1C role and flourish. It never happened. He had chemistry with guys like Booth, Horton, Flash and Versteeg, but it wasn't enough to produce like a 1C. The guy peaked at the 2C role and that was where he was most comfortable. His best days are truly behind him. Good riddance.

If he were part cyborg and had a 200mph shot...

still no.

Respect the guy for his early years here. He just doesn't belong here anymore though. At the end even when healthy he just looked like he didn't care any more and his stats reflected it.

The future looks good. Not interested in the past.

There's a legit question here, so I'll leave the thread open, but please don't make fantasy trade offers. I've edited the OP to take out that element. If you want to make said trade offers, please use our dedicated thread.

Thank you.

Meanwhile - I was sad to see Weiss go, but that boat has sailed and probably shouldn't be coming back.

Nothing but positive about Weiss but he's not coming back unless he would retire here at a later age.

The guy who said that ship has sailed said it best. Respected Weiss' time here, but he's looking like he'll never regain his best form as a top #2 type of guy. If he can't succeed with the talent in Detroit, that really spells it out. I hope he finds his groove again, but it's time to look forwards and let the kids have their time (Bjugs, Barkov, and even possibly Shore who has 2 goals tonight or Trochek down the road).

We are not done with him yet, I think he will have a bounce back year next season.
