I like the deal for Calgary. Lock up a useful player for good term and cap-hit.

I like the deal as well for the Flames. I was a little off on my prediction, I thought he would get one more year, but overall it's a solid deal. Stajan isn't a top 6 center anymore, but he is pretty versatile on the third line.

I wish the term was 2 year shorter, but I'm not too distraught over it. He'll start taking more of a backseat role once Monahan starts developing more.

Not happy about this. He's not what the Flames need at center while the kids develop.

A defensive player that is fine with no pp time and tons of pk time and never complains about his job but does it the best he can? Sorry but he has been a very solid centerman for us and is loved in the room he is a great role guy to have. I wish it had been 3 years but I am very happy to have Stajan to allow Monahan and Colborne to get the easier minutes.

it's 3.125 a year, you want 30 goals from that kind of player?

Sit down, I've got some bad news for you.

Stajan is a good player at that cap hit. Good deal for a rebuilding team.

Stajan likely knows he wasn't going to get much better than that and he'd rather stay in one place.

It's not that bad actually. In a couple years, with the cap going up, that contract will have about the same value as a $2.5 million contract today. That's not bad for a 3rd line, PKing center. We might even get some sort of a return for him in a couple years, when the kids are ready to take his spot. As it sits right now, he probably would walk for nothing.

Is Brian Burke still pretending he's going to hire a GM?

No but about half of the Flames fans have always held it against him that Dion was traded for him and have always used him as a whipping boy.

I like Stajan as a #3 C, I don't like him as a top-6 C. Having said that, I think it's fair value for a player you can throw out in any situation and does a bit of everything - PP, PK, faceoffs, shot-blocking, etc.

Hopefully in a couple years:

#1C - McDavid?
#2C - Monahan
#3C - Stajan/Backlund
#4C - Colborne

Flames fans go from never having a legit #1C since Joe Nieuwendyk to having a 1-2 punch of McDavid - Monahan...

Dream come true! (doubt it, though.)

I rather get some picks for Stajan than have him play our 3rd line center while we're rebuilding. At the moment we could roll with

#1 Backlund and #2 Monahan, then have a young guy like Reinhart try at #3.

I don't think we got ripped off, but I wouldn't have resigned Stajan.

Not a fan of the length to be honest. I mean, 3.125 is fine I guess. 4 years is longer than I would have liked though.

Good deal, I think it would have looked better at 3 years though.

From a fan of a rebuilding team to others, we all know you need some sort of veteran leadership. This is good for the Flames.

Eh, not a Matt Stajan fan. You'd think the Flames would be more eager to shed those mediocre ex-Leafs. The guy has minor league skills and is so physically weak.

Yes starting nothing but young players has worked out great up North.

So our 3rd line center next year is going to be a guy that doesn't even play center. Sweet! Nothing like putting pressure on Monohan and Backlund.
