Jeez dude, rebuilding doesn't mean stripping the team to shreds so we ice an AHL team for 5 years straight. Taking a 4th for Stajan would just be stupid. You resign him if that is the best offer.

That is correct, except for the fact that Burke has already resigned him before seeing his best offers. The trade deadline is crazy and assets are thrown around recklessly during that time. Maybe a fourth is the best he could get right now, but what if a top team like Chicago decides that want to go all out and go for a repeat? Or a injury to a contender turns them into desperate buyers?

That's right. You ship out whoever you can and sort through the leftovers when everything is said and done.

If Stajan isn't moved at the deadline then that's when you sign the extension. Burkie should have waited.

He was great last season. His line (that took the top lines every team) was the best and only he and Stempniak finished as + players on a wreck of what was the Flames roster. He's dipped a bit offensively this season but everyone on the Flames is struggling.

Good signing I think, Calgary needs guys who have been in the league for a while to mentor the more skilled young kids they will be bringing in.

Seems like a good deal...lower Cap hit, less money...not bad.

Or what if teams get desperate enough to offer extra for a good player on new (good) contract?

I am sure Stajan will do a good job guiding. He has been a loser most of his NHL career.

Didn't stop the Blues from trading for JBo, now did it?

If it's true that there's no NMC then this really is progress for Calgary. It seems most of their roster has NMCs

Good signing, probably the best veteran Calgary could have kept as they rebuild.

I picture one of those carnival ride signs that reads "You must be this good to make the flames", and has an arrow pointing to Matt Stajan.

Why does it matter if he waits to hire his puppet/GM? These decisions will be his in the end anyways, that's how it's going to be structured.

GM = does all the leg work
VP of Hockey = final decisions on player movement/acquisitions

I guess, if by most you mean 3 (Wideman/Gio/Glencross). Four if you include Cammy's limited NMC (has a list of 10 teams he can't be traded to.)

One of the few things Feaster did well at was moving out NMC's, and limiting the amount that he gave out himself.

I agree. But just a quick clarification - he's the President and not the VP.

The contract looks fair, but like some others I am puzzled by the timing. I would have expected Burke to continue shopping Stajan through the trade deadline and if nothing worthwhile surfaced offer the extension then.

I agree that you can't ice an all rookie/sophomore line up, but with the Flames cap situation I would expect that they could lure in a vet or two over the summer,

Most of our roster eh.

Are Flames the only team in the league that has players on NMC? no.

I think this is a good signing. While he might not have the best deal, sooner or later Flames need assets. Who knows what you get for this guy, probably what you will get in return is a chance a guy might be as good as Stajan.

Don't try to trade him to the Hawks now.

While I would have been fine with Stajan being traded, chancing his value on a fourth is silly. We have enough ho-hum fourth rounder types in Abbotsford. As other posters have alluded to, you need warm bodies for a rebuild. Icing an AHL team defeats the purpose, and there's no real experienced centre depth after him. The Flames certainly aren't hurting for cap space, so what is Burke supposed to do? Trade him for scraps for the sake of your ideological mantra of Trading Every Veteran At The Deadline and then end up re-signing someone for similar money to do the same job.

I agree. Maybe I'm a little naive, but I think after 2-3 more seasons, the Flames will have other guys who can take Stajan's role (Knight and/or Reinhart, and hopefully they keep Backlund around).

Sit down, I've got some bad news for you.
I think you misread, Matt Stajan does not have 30 goals since becoming flame, period. Not a 30 goal season.
