I don't get the hate on that. If I'm the away team watching that feed, I'd be thrilled about how disappointed the Avs pbp guy is. Complaining about this would be like complaining about how the arena announcer doesn't sound exciting when announcing the scoring summary of the away team.
And when the opposition scores.
HE'S HIGH IN THE SLOT, HE SHOOTS, goal.
I dont listen to the avs team to hear how awesome the other guys goal was. If I wanted to hear how awesome the other team was I'd listen to their feed. I like our homer announcers. It's not like they dont give props to good goals by other teams.
The goal / scores stuff doesn't bother me. If fans of other teams didn't bring it (Haynes doing it) up constantly I probably wouldn't even notice it.
Also, Moser is the best.
M surprised not new post about the close ups of players on bench or goal, while the game is being played.... It would be like showing manning dropping back to pass in football, then a close up of the coach" drives me nuts.
I like our announcers. McNab's drunken stories are hilarious and he is very self-deprecating. He was actually a really good hockey player for a long time, but whenever he talks about himself, he makes himself sound worse than Bordy. He would be a guy I would love to share a few beers with and just talk about hockey.... what a color commentator should be. Haynes, he is a decent play by play guy that loves the Avs and hates to see them lose. If he was on NBC people should have a problem with him, but he is on Altitude so his homerism is perfectly fine with me.
Does it really matter though. It's not like we watch the games to hear them talk. I don't know about others, but I tend to tune them out unless they have some tidbit of interesting info or say something completely ridiculous.
I hate Haynes and McNab, but I have noticed that they have gotten better. Haynes actually announces the games now with a solid score at the end of each opponents goal and McNab is saying useful things instead of his World War II stories.
I'll take our guys over Bob Miller and Jim Fox 6 days a week and twice on Sunday. They are aggravating to listen to. They're the biggest homers in the NHL and Fox's proclivity to put raise the end of every sentence with an aggressively annoying up-pitch makes me want to punch babies.
Him and McNabb do give credit where it's due, though, when the opposition scores a great goal.
Well, oftentimes it's *always* a good goal. Only when it's obviously goalie error (like the other day against Tampa) do they call out the Avs for a mistake. But I'm not saying they need to do a rip job on any Avs players, I just wish McNab, for instance, had a little more leeway to say what he wanted. As others have pointed out, it almost seems like he's muzzled sometimes.
I don't mind McNab at all. He actually has good insights. I just don't like Haynes. Just not a good mix IMO. Kelly and McNab were as good as it gets.
For the record, the best play-by-play guy for Denver-area sports IMHO is Jerry Schemmel. He almost made the Nuggets during the Bickerstaff era listenable. Almost.
Probably the funniest thing McNab did on air was when Kelly was still in the booth with him and he commemorated the anniversary of the first cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse by calling it "Shotgun Willie" instead of "Steamboat Willie."
I'm fine with our announcers. McNab has been around for so long that it will actually be weird when he leaves. Haynes is ok, I think I liked Kelly more. Moser is great on the radio, he's exciting, quick, and descriptive. I really like who Altitude has for TV analysts. Rycroft always hits the nail on the head, and says what needs to be said. I've never heard him be wrong about something. And sometimes my former coach, Brian Engblom, takes Rycroft's place. Coach Engblom is a hockey genius and really knows what he's talking about. He's always fun to listen to.
I just don't like it. I get it to a certain extent. He should definitely be more excited by an Avs goal then the opposition--he of course is catering to his audience--but the way he calls it is almost like he's embarrassed to say the opposition scored. It's not a big deal, it's just one of many things that annoy me about Haynes.
I've never had the opportunity to listen, but the Sharks guys appear to be universally loathed. What is it about them that people hate so much?
I'll say this much, Haynes doesn't ***** and moan about calls not going the Avs' way the way I've heard other announcers do. And Haynes will never be the clown Jack Edwards is, so for that I'm grateful. I'm just sad the old dynamic is gone. Altitude really screwed it up by hiring the doofus from Mystery, Alaska (whom I'm pretty sure Peter McNab wanted to kill after that first broadcast) and had to scramble like mad to cover for it, thereby making both the radio and TV broadcast teams a little weaker, IMO.
I was waiting in my car at DIA For my wife and found the NHL station on Sirius and if was astonishing how professional mouths could drivel on about frickin nothing. Talking about how nice some coach is and how demanding team travel is going east from west coast... Blah blah blah....
So maybe I'm spoiled or maybe I just hate talk radio.
