Payroll

Subtracting Arkhipov, and assuming reasonable deals for our RFAs...we're at about 27-28 million, and that has me a little worried.

Does Kariya's signing signify that negotiations with Sullivan aren't going well? Does Erat want too much money?

What's everyone think?

Well atleast we will get some compensation if they decide to go somewhere else, and we also are given the right to match. If they want too much now, I think their tone will change come October.

As I posted in the other thread.....Could Sully be traded for a bonafide #1 center with a $3 mill allowable price tag.......think about it......

I think if any of them are seriously going to hold out, we will trade them for a center.

while i like sully, kariya + center we potentially get for sully > center we could have gotten on the market + sully.

the question would be is Kariya + Sully + Center by committee > Kariya + center we potentially get for sully

it depends on the center.

1) #1-ish center b/n Kariya and Walker
2) Legwand b/n Erat and Hall
3) Johnson b/n Hartnell and Upshall/Gamache
4) Smithson/Fiddler b/n Hordy and Tootoo
Stevenson the plug in on certain nights.

or

1) Legwand b/n Kariya and Walker
2) Johnson b/n Erat and Sully
3) Hall/Cheapo FA b/n Hartnell and Stevenson/Hall
4) Smithson/Fiddler b/n Hordy and Tootoo

Edit...while it seems like poile has had enough of him, he didn't 100% rule out Arkhipov coming back. It sounds like if Denis can say the right things, come over and work hard in camp that he could be a consideration. The odds on those things happening are slim, but as we've said for years, if Arkhi could ever get it and be OT goal vs Columbus Arkhi, he'd be exactly what we need. I know it's not something we can expect, but the door is slightly ajar.

I think Poile would bump up against the personal cap even right now. They always said that they wanted to leave some room so that as the playoffs neared, they could land a player like Sullivan. Well, what if a player better than Sullivan appeared before the season started? I think you saw the Preds change plans. Now, we may not be in a position to add payroll towards the end of the season. But we are certainly in a better position now than 10 hours ago.

I feel better about Sullivan being retained after reading the press conference quotes. Sullivan was mentioned by name...over and over.

Yup. And Trotz specifically mentioned moving Sully to center and he sounds like he's put some thought into the line combos and where that'll put Sullivan. I'd be suprised if he left Nashville.

Honestly I'm not worried. We've retained Sully and I honestly believe that he'll want to stay here, especially now with Kariya. As for Erat, not sure but I would hope he's not asking for too much.

Above all though, Poille has shown he knows what he's doing. I would have never guessed that we would have been in the running for Kariya, but I saw a quote somewhere that they've been going for him since Day 1 of UFA season. Poille and the rest of the organization knows what the team needs (IE letting Eaton go then realizing how much he means to the team and getting him back).

It sounds like they planned to land Kariya and pitched him hard from day one. This makes many of the quotes we saw from David and Craig make more sense now than they did when they appeared.
I wonder how much Kariya's experience as a bit player on the Avs influenced his choice to sign with the Preds. Clearly by coming here he plays the role of biggest roster star, as opposed to many other places he could have signed.
I was stunned when I first read about it, had more or less given up on the Preds making any big moves. I'm glad it worked out -- this should be great for marketing, get our team more in the highlight reels, and create more excitement all around about the season.

Whats the thoughts on Poile being let loose at the trading dead line if PK's signing puts significant dollars into the coffers. Between ticket and memorabilia sales what will his impact be? Another factor would be the record at that time which could translate into many playoff games.
